Hesitation and whatnot 200

I previously posted regarding my 1984 Volvo 240 and its inability to start regularly. It is starting better now, definitely worse when cold starting, but will always crank up after a few tries. It's also having a problem where it wants to hesitate and knock when accelerating hard from idle under no load. It was also sputter and hesitate under heavy load, but drives fine otherwise. I've checked the vaccuum routing, the air mass meter, and cleaned the throttle body.

Any ideas?

Jeff

After or before the main fuel pump there is a diode... I am a electrical eng so I think in electrical terms. A small device which allows the fuel to go only one direction. So, after you stop the car the fuel can not flow back to the fuel tank. It is faulty, this is the reason you have to crank the engine for some time. Yo can make a fuel gauage, and make sure that the fuel pressure is correct, and after the car is stopped tha pressure stays. Good luck Gabriel

Bad in-tank fuel pump, or a hole in the in-tank hose. Knocking is caused primarily by a lean condition. This is one possibility, others include a plugged fuel filter or a bad fuel pressure regulator. My first guess is the in-tank fuel pump or hose.
