I've gotten my 1990 740 Turbo Wagon into a bit of a front end smash up! :(
I have a Grand-Dad who is a bit of a tinker on cars and would like to replace the front end, since there seems to be no engine/frame damage.
I need a hood/left and right front quarter panels/front grill.
Would someone know:
1: where to score parts on (east) Long Island
and
2: are there other year/models with interchangeable parts?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge w/us!! :)

Two Long Islanders Brickboarders gave me the other day these 2 hints:
1- Medford Auto Wreckers,off LIE exit 64
2- There is a strip of yards in Medford on Peconic ave ( east of Rt112).
A small group in Deer Park Grand Blvd and Commack road. That's where I got my Donor Passenger seat for my seat rebuild. They had very limited Volvo stuff.
there was a junkyard in the Bayshore called MARS. but they charged ridiculous prices
Good luck

Yep,
!990 is unique front end wise. I have a grey one sitting in my driveway that is heading to the wreckers very shortly. I remember when this one first arrived as a 1st car for my oldest daughter 3 years ago and i ordered headlight surrounds for it. The ones that arrived were similar but differerent and would not fit. Even the vendor did not realize 1990 was unique until we both researched it. I'm in mass. and you are welcome to this 740 for zip if you want to take the whole car. paint is not the greatest but I believe it is damage free.
Dan
btw, motor still runs well with 245k on it and tranny is good. No fuel lines(rusted out) I would have repaired it and kept driving but she is a college student on the other side of the state so upgraded to a very nice 940

Dan, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VERY PROMPT REPLY!
THANK YOU for your generous offer!!!!
Where in Mass. are you located?
Grand-dad is there now, in the Boston area though.
Maybe it's feasible, maybe not!
Thanks for that not so good news, but helpful, nonetheless, regarding it's "uniqueness".
I always thought that Volvo's were, now you've confirmed it!! :)

Hi TT,
I'm located about 35minutes south of Boston in Pembroke. I can take a digital pic of it if you like. I would have to know soon if you want to take it since it will be going to the recycler very soon if not. Let me know.

Dan, I rec'd the pic of your car. I tried responding via e-mail, but your mail limit is maxed. I wanted to show you a pic of my car, to see what an experinced person such as yourself thought. Is it a wagon you have? And does it matter? The lamps seem different to me, mine has fog lamps to the inside of the headlamps. Does that matter? Maybe you can increase your mail acceptance so that I could send you the pic. I've put a call out to Grandad, I so hate to bother the guy while on vaca. At 79, you just shouldn't be getting harrassed by the kids anymore!! "LOL" Thanks again Dan for ALL your help. Sheila

Dan, Would you please take a pic, if it's not too much trouble. You can e-mail it direct, JUNKMAIL2824@aol.com, if you like. Mean time I'll try reaching Grandad in MA. and see what he has to say about the whole thing.
THANKS A WHOLE LOT! TT

Hello,
To set the record straight here is deal with the front end parts. This is all info my parting these cars for the past 8 years and the Hollander Book

Grille 1990 Only
Headlight Capsules/Mounting Plates 1990-1995

Steve, I don't know if you remember, but you gave me some great advice re: my Volvo Wagon earlier this month.Somehow I screwed up and it's not a 740 that I have but a 760 1990 Volvo Wagon. I realized it when someone had shown me a picture of their 740 and I noticed the difference in headlamps. Mine are one unit, with a fog lamp located on the inside. I'm in need of a hood/front grill(lamps included)/left & right fenders, from a front end bang-up. Might you have these parts available too?
Thanks again.

I know a lot of the 1990 parts are unique but I'm not sure the extent of it. I know of two parts cars, one here in eastern CT and one just over the border in Rhode Island. A quick ferry trip away, and the cars are pretty close to New London.
The one in RI is a fairly complete 1991 740 wagon, NA. Not hit, front end metal is good, most plastic is junky. That one has 300K on it. Parts are blue. The other car is a 1990 NA sedan, white, and it's crunched down the driver's side, fender and door. Hood and RF fender are good, as is most headlights, front plastic, etc. No good corner lamps, IIRC, between the 2 cars.
If coming up to CT interests you or you're already planning to come this way, let me know, and we can probably put together a parts expedition.
Again, I'm not sure exactly which parts from the 91 will fit the 90. I think the sheetmetal is the same. You need to look at yours and figure out if the black fiberglass stuff around the radiator is any good.
For lights, which seem impossible to get used, try www.lampsandlenses.com. They're out of NJ and prices are the best.

Rob, Thank you so much for your reply!!
Your right, RI is just a ferry ride away!
Being concerned about the "uniqueness" of that 90 Turbo, I'd be apprehensive of going with anything but at this point.
I will bring it to Granddads attention, for he will be the one making the final call on this.
Thanks again!

I've got everything you need, except a front bumper. I parted out two of them. One white, in great shape, one gray metallic, hood starting to peel. Too bad I'm in northern Virginia.
740s 90-92 are the same. Some 940s may be as well, but I'm not 100% sure.

740s 90-92 are the same.
Are you sure about that? I would swear the 1990 "doghouse" is unique to that year.

Randy, that's hilarious, is that what they call them, "doghouses"?!! It totally looks like one, now that you've said it! All these affectionate terms are just making this whole accident thing harder on me!!! :(

1990 is a unique year, at least according to the part numbers I was given when my niece ran ours into the back end of someone. They told me the 91-up 740's shared parts with the 940. You could call a dealer to verify that. If both fenders, hood, grill, headlights, etc need replacing (and especially if Grandpa is a tinkerer), you may want to see about trying to adapt an entire 940 front clip - I don't think it would be impossible to do, and there would be a lot more parts available the next time it happens.

Chris, What a great idea! Thanks for sharing that! And thanks for the important info. I see you have a'90 740, is it up for grabs? Where would you be located? And also, lets hope there isn't a "next time", I couldn't bear the thought, or insurance costs!! :) Thanks again, TT

Uh, I second that, what is a '90 doghouse?
At some point they quit badging them 740gl, and that was either 91 or 92. But in '90 they did go to the new styling, which I do somewhat like. But I wasn't aware of anything but badging differences.

The 1990 what? doghouse?

Sorry, "doghouse" is old school terminology for an entire front clip. At least where I grew up in the midwest (Ohio) that is the term that was used... probably because front clips would make decent doghouses if you couldn't get your hands on a 55 gallon drum or a whiskey barrel :-]
The point being it is my understanding that the front sheet metal on a 1990 740 will not fit other years.

In Virginia, in the junkyard business, it's called a "front", short for front clip. Both of mine are from '90s. A White GLE sedan and a gray GL wagon. I've got two sets of sheet metal and one complete set of lights in good shape, and two of all the internal bits and pieces. Already sold the one bumper that was good, the neck broke off of one radiator and I used the other.
Does anyone know what the actual difference is between 90 and later? I have run into several instances of parts with different numbers that looked identical and could be interchanged. Could this be the case here? You could probably install the entire 940 front, as it is unlikely the mounting points on the body shell changed. I remember seeing a 740T wagon on Turbobricks that had a late 960 or V90 front on it. I think it was pretty straightforward except for the bumper, because he wanted to use a T5R body kit, and the spoiler was the wrong width or something.

I think selling someone a '91 740 grille and headlight trim for their '90 740 will result in an unhappy buyer. And I have the '90 turbo eggcrate grille in hand to compare with the '91 740 grille. I think Steve K is right on.

Thanks for your input. I'll ceratinly keep ALL this info in mind! Who wants to be unhappy? I don't want to be anymore than I already am everytime I walk out the front door and see the Turbo Turtle all crunched up, and yet it sounds as good as ever!! It amazes me!
peace, TT
