Removing the Overdrive from the transmission 200

this is a your basic M46 with a J-type overdrive.

unbolted all the bolts.

but can't find a way to get it of. yanked on it pretty good.

the unit will rotate just a bit (just the slack between the bolts and the holes), so i know it's not stuck to the gasket.

any tricks anyone knows of removing?

would it matter if there was fluid in it or not, or what gear the tranny was in?

thanks

-Bruce

I got a little scared when I was doing my Type "P". I followed OD Guru's adviced using a large rubber mallet and some elbow grease. It took some time but it popped off.

Good luck

Put trans in reverse, with partner holding trans input shaft, attempt to turn output flange on OD clockwise as you look from the rear. As you do this use plastic or wood mallet to tap on the OD case just forward of point where the case flares larger.

Partner releases grip on trans shaft, takes mallet and as you pull on and turn flange, taps on OD case. Best person to tap on OD case is someone between 8 and 12. Able to control mallet, cannot hit hard enough to do damage.

If that does not work, separate the two cases and remove in two pieces.

One method is to put the transmission in reverse and stall the car by letting out the clutch. While I do not know exactly why that works, I know that it does. Someone posted it here and I had remembered that when I had to remove mine on an 82 GLT.

What OD guru described works with the tranny off the car. I must admit I used a framing hammer(probably not a great idea) to "tap" the overdrive while I wiggled it off holding and twisting the the output flange. They feel like they are not budging, and then suddenly it pops off.
