Hey guys,
1998 S90. Mostly highway driven 80-120km/h. I get around 23mpg. What do you guys get?

is your transmission on the E or the S setting? I drive a bit agressively, but do in the mid-upper 20s with a mix of city/highway. on a long trip to FL a few years ago, drving a bit too fast (ok...way too fast), I still did upper 20s.
I have noticed when I am in the S mode I have more fun driving, but use a lot more gas, similar to what you are reporting.
What about the rest of you...what mode is your transmission?

I use the "S" mode always. I am always driving up/down hills and at the high altitude that I live, the engine makes about 25% less power than at sea level so "S" mode makes it more bearable.

E for most apps.
S for merging on the various parkways in my area (Hutchinson River, Taconic, Merrit). These roads were built in the 30's and 40's, and have little to no on-ramp. E would do fine, but it's fun to let the engine rev a little....Then right back to E.
BTW, the W setting does a nice job in snow.

My 1984 244 with 51K (its was a grandma car) around Westchester NY gets about 25 and above. I am generally a light footed driver.

Haven't hung around here for awhile, but this is one of the reasons I'm now considering sellng my 97 V90. I get around the same mpg, aboutn 23 overall. When I lived in Baltimore, it was brutal @ about 12-14 mpg. I drove like any typical east coast driver. M travel to work was definitely city and less that 3 miles one-way.
Now I walk or bike to work and drive the Brick mostly for errands and trips. Don't even pay attention anymore.

For the entire life of our S90 I have kept very detailed records. The first 3 years were in commute tracffic, the last 5 have been in rural/highway (very little city) driving at high altitude (leaner running) so my numbers may not reflect the norm.
The average since day one has been 23.940 mpg. I have broken 29 mpg 5 times, the last time I hit 29.856 and it was all highway (I-70) driving. I'm obviously not an agressive driver.
I fill the tank the same way every time and use the same gas station. I always use premium.
When my wife drives, she has a heavier foot pulling away from stop lights and the mpg numbers will drop by 2-3 mpg.

15 NY city, 17 "village" ie home, 25-28 highway. Approx. same as I got in my 945. Alot less than my 87 744.
No complaints.

My car is 1995 960 Wagon.
Last month I drove the wife, 2 kids, and myself, and all of our junk, along with a not-very-aerodynamic Thule cargo carrier up to Door County, WI for a week's vacation with the A/C blasting all the way there and back. I used the cheapest low-octane fuel due to its relative affordability, although I usually run a mid-grade with 15% ethanol blend.
We average about 23.75 mpg.
Most of the time the car is used to chauffer the toddlers on short trips around town and we only get about 17 mpg.
Wish I got better mileage, but a new car payment would cost much more than what I'm paying to fill the tank on this gas guzzler.

I've had my 96 965 since Jan 05. I drive mostly city; about 20 miles/day and use mid grade or premium (I have not noticed a performance or efficiency difference btw the two). I average just over 17 mpg city and have consistently averaged just over 28 mpg during long trips (say 500 miles +) when driving about 85 mph (it's a long, boring drive to just about anywhere from El Paso, TX).

Boring driving from El Paso? You have never been caught in a blizzard near Van Horn, then. BTDT in a 1979 245DL stick. When you are on I-10 some east of Van Horn, look north through the valley and you can see El Capitan.
Take your 965 to Cloudcroft, stay in The Lodge, and have a fine meal in the dining room at evening, so you can watch the sun set over White Sands and the Organ Mountains.
On the way back visit White Sands National Monument, be sure to go in the Visitor Center and read about the forming of the valley, it is rare in that is not one with a river flowing through it.
Drive to Ruidoso, take along "Pat Garret" written by Metzger, or "The Saga of Billy the Kid", and then drive up to Lincoln, NM and walk the paths used in the Lincoln County War. See the John Wayne movie "Chisum" for the Hollywood version.
Drive to Columbus, NM, go out to the the lava beds, but only if your 965 will do the round trip, no help available out there. Likely not even cell phone service.
On your next drive to San Antonio, stop off for a cooling swim at Balmorrhea Park in Toyahvale. They won't let you swim in the part of the pool with the larger fish.
While looking at the terrain around there, remember that folks made that trip 100+ years ago before the invention of toilet paper and paper towels. Also, the ruins of forts, found in the Texas Forts Trail folder, show how the cavalry was stationed around the territory to keep the Apaches and/or Commanches (just behind that hill over there) from scalping travellers.
Last - Did you get flooded? I hope not, but friends say that many places I remember were underwater.

PS: My 965 gets 20mpg on a week of wife.sig commute (44 miles a day), better if she uses the freeway/toll road. On the highway, like I-10 to Kerrville, gets 26 to 27 mpg. That run is about 250 non-stop miles.
PPS: Buy the book "Why Stop" from a AAA office, or a TexDOT visitor's center. About $20. Lists ALL of the Historical Markers in Texas. Good way to put some live into what are, sometimes, otherwise boring miles. Toyahvale to Ft. Stockton, e.g. Oh, be sure to visit Fort Davis and MacDonald Observatory, too.

I got a best of 28.8 mpg highway on my trip to Florida last month in my 97 960. That was with my limiting the speed to 65 mph on the way down. On the trip back I ran the speed limit where I was hitting 70 mph more than half way and I got 27.5 mpg.
The car is filled with synthetics and the tires were pumped up to 40 psi.

98 V90, 33 psi front, 37 psi rear: 485 mile trips from Brownsburg, IN to Warren, PA consistently got 25 MPG w/ 87 Octane & 26 MPG w/ 91 octane. Only use regular now as price / performance is better value w/ regular. Speeds were steady 73 MPH on cruise but did overtake most trucks before they got in the way - this required speeds as high as 90 MPH & got me two speeding tickets. Half of these trips were fully loaded as was furnishing an apartment. Overall I'm happy w/ the trip milage. Also have a 1988 740 GLE w/ 274,000 miles that gets 27 MPG on trips but has no passing power. Just put a new head gasket on last Winter & was surprised to see original 45 degree hone marks in all cylinders and valve clearances in perfect adjustmant only needing new rubber dampners on valve stems. I attribute very low cylinder wear to low piston speeds (short stroke) & regular oil changes at 3000 to 4000 mile intervals. I've nick named our 740, "The Bullet" as my wife nearly totaled it in '90, two kids have learned to drive using it & my son loves to take it on coast to coast trips w/ his collge buddies. I've done all the maintenance - the mechanical parts far outlast the electricals. I believe I have a list of part miles to failure if anyone is intested.
