Gas Mileage Q - again 200

The gas mileage of my 92 245 puzzles me.

30 mpg highway without a/c, 26 mpg highway with a/c, 16 (!) mpg city without a/c.

16 mpg? The car is tuned-up, no starting problems, no fuel smell, no fuel leak, no smoke, no issues, tires are right size and have correct pressure, I am not carrying any loads, just the car itself.

Any ideas? Other than somebody stole my gas?

Argh, how disappointing. My previous 87 245 got 23 mpg in the city and that was in a state of neglect. Both cars are automatics.

city driving and traffic sucks, i like to keep my shifter in the aw70 autotrans in first when im in vancouver sitting in oak street traffic, so i dont have to gas when its about to shift to second, then i have to brake. Im not sure what exactly my MPG is but about half of my commute is city traffic and i drive 120km a day. I fill up for around 45 - 50 dollars canadian (45 liters approx) and i'll get at least 400 kilometers to that.

Solution:

Ride your bike in town
Drive your volvo on the freeway

I wish I was getting 30 mpg at speed!

Seriously though, is your idle high? Tranny shifting properly?

Idle seems fine and almost inaudible.

Odometer was just fixed and seems to be correct, I look at it often and it is rolling over just as it should.

The tranny does a funny thing...after shifting into second, car accelerates as normal then hesitates for a few seconds before picking up again. It's like the car is falling back for 3 seconds or so. My mechanic looked the entire car over approx. 1 week ago, he drove it too because of the funny tranny, he says everything looks fine, car needs nothing, not even a tranny flush; as a matter-of-fact he was quite impressed with the condition of the car. But the shifting thing still bothers me. Since it does it at low gear, whatever it is, it might affect the gas mileage at low speeds...

Biking is not an option, college town with 35,000 students AND their SUVs, I will get killed. Plus my 70 lbs bulldog does not fit on my bike well.

5 gallons, 82 miles. I am still bummed out about it.

That's seriously extreme. Maybe your odometer is funky?

Either someone stole your gas or your trans is slipping big time. Check the trans fluid and replace if low or too dark.

Just add it to existing fluid? Willing to try anything...as long as it doesn't do any harm.

Any opinions on that stuff?
