replacing the flasher HELP!!! 900 1993

OK, my flasher has died and my turn signals with it. Where and HOW do I replace the flasher? (I got a replacement from an auto parts store.)

Dearpitbull107,

May this find you well. According to Volvo Tech Publication 32208/1 (Wiring Diagram, 940 󞩹]), p. 88 - Turn Signals and Hazard Warning Flashers - the relay you seek is in the middle position, in the middle row of relays. The main relay block is behind the front center console ashtray.

To access it:
(a) when doing any electrical work, it is prudent to disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal, and put the cable clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it
(b) use the shift release to move the shift lever as far back as possible from the console
(c) remove the front center console ashtray, by pressing on the release bar at the bottom of the ashtray
(d) remove the cigarette lighter and adjacent storage tray (one unit), by removing the bezel around the cigarette lighter. The bezel can be pulled off. Grip the right-hand edge with your fingers, and pull gently to your left. That exposes two Phillips-head screws. Remove them. Pull the storage unit out gently, and disconnect the wires to the cigarette lighter
(e) you can easily reach the relays.

There are three rows of relays. The one you seek is the middle row, second from the left.

I do not know if a generic relay will fit/work properly. Install the relay, reconnect the negative battery cable clamp to the terminal, and test.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook

That sounds a bit tricky. Should I go to the dealer and have them put in the OEM part?

Dear pitbull107,

Good a.m. and may this find you well. You don't need a Volvo technician to do this. First and foremost, you need to know how to access the relay block. The reason: the fuel system relay will - at some point - fail. If you have a spare with you, you access the relay block, swap relays, and you're back on the road, after about a five-minute delay.

If you can access the relay block, you can pull the failed/failing flasher relay, and plug in a new one. No tools are needed to swap relays: they pull out and plug in.

You could get a replacement relay:
(a) at a salvage yard (where you can also practice accessing the relay block, if the yard will allow you access to the cars [a so-called "pick and pull" salvage yard]
(b) from www.fcpgroton.com [ask for Nick Bauer]
(c) from www.bortonvolvo.com [ask for Jon Richardson].

Borton's is a Volvo dealer (in Minnesota), who will offer you a discount.

Hope this helps.

Post back, if I - or another Brickboarder - can further help

Yours faithfully,

spook

I guess I am afraid of the possibility of me doing something to damage the tray.
Does it pull out easily? I see the other duese which are right in front, bu to get to the relay section must require the tray to be pulled forward, correct?

Dear pitbull107,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. The storage tray is secured by the two Phillips-head screws, which are located next to the lighter opening. When the screws are loose, grip the bottom edge of the tray, next to the lighter. Pull it gently towards you. You'll see the wires to the lighter, and to the light-bar above it. Disconnect those wires (I recall there are three wires, each with a connector of a different size, so you can't easily confuse them).

Then, push the housing on the right side, away from the edge of the storage tray. The storate tray's "ears" - small plastic tabs - will then pass by the edge of the housing. You will then have easy access to the relays.

I appreciate you desire to do this carefully. I wish everyone were as cautious.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Is there any other relays that I should be replacing while I'm at it? You mentioned the fuel relay.....

Dear pitbull107,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. It is a good idea to have spare relays for:
(a) fuel injection (white, rectangular); (b) over-drive (white, tall, square);
bulb failure (red-orange cylinder).

I think you find accessing the relays is easier than it may now seem. If you have these spares "on board", and one fails, it will take you a few minutes to replace it. You can get these relays at any salvage yard, that keeps 740 or 940 Volvos.

Test any relays that you get from a salvage yard - by putting them into your car, and verifying that it still works properly. If so, and write on the side of each tested relay, "OK", with the date. That way, if a relay fails, you'll have a "known good" relay with which to replace it.

Yours faithfully,

spook

Thanks for all the great information! Is there some publicatio that lists the Volvo part numbers for these items? I have TP 32208/1 but I don't see any part number references.

Dear pitbull107,

May this find you well. Volvo publishes parts catalogues for these cars. I do not know if they are still "in print", i.e., available. Part numbers change over time, but there are cross-references.

For key relays, the part numbers are:
Overdrive = 3523804-7
Bulb burn-out = 1362370-7
Fuel Pump = 3523608
Fuel injection = 1323592-1

Some of these numbers may have changed. Generally, the last digit - the one following the hyphen - may not appear on the part itself.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

spook
