What I learned about Auxiliary air pumps S90-V90

A few months ago, the aux air pump in my wife's V90 crapped out. I got a used one on ebay for not much money, and held on to the dead one. Tonight, i started taking the old pump apart. Those rivets holding it together are real pushovers. Just crimp them on one end with a pair of pliers and then tap them through with a skinny screwdriver or a framing nail.

Anyway, I've determined that mine probably died from a failed bushing or bearing. The ohmeter showed that current was still able to pass through, but the fan was pretty hard to turn by hand. Another dead giveaway was that there was a lot of greasy black dust that kept falling out of the plastic housing. Looked like some poor rubber piece had finally groud itself down.

I had pretty much destroyed the fan in an attempt to see what was behind it. There is what looks like a retainer nut that holds the fan onto the motor shaft, but the bolt is completely round and tapered up, so it's impossible to grip with a any tools. If someone has gotten past this nut, please tell me how to do it before the pump carcass goes in the garbage.

Now this all begs the question: is there any safe way to lubricate the internal parts of this motor to prevent (or at least postpone) failure?

What I learned about Auxiliary air pumps S90-V90

Hello it is frustrating that these pumps are so easily damaged. I have yet to figure out how to take a part, however the Saab 9ooo and some 9oo also use the same air pump. I use the 960 air pumps to repair the s70 air pump because of the cost savings and it takes no time to take the back cover off and then pop out the rivets and change the end of the pump. A good used 960 air pump is selling for 60.00 here, when a good used 850 s70 pump is 235.00, so I spend fifteen minutes more to convert to a s-70 pump. I gave up trying to take apart.

I've read that the Air pump from a Passat V6 is nearly identical to the ones in the V70. Take a few slight mods, but it will do the job. They cost about $90 new.

Why do you need the pump?
Environmental reasons or does the car not run well.
I think it is there to get the cat up to temp as soon as possible.

You are correct. It gets the cat up to operating temperature quickly

environmental reasons-- more like it keeps the car within legal emmisions standards when the engine is cold (at least that's my theory). The air pump is like an apendix on these cars. An apedix can send you to the doctor, and a faulty air pump will turn on your CEL.
