1990 740 t Headliner (already scanned FAQ) 700

Hi;

My absolutely mint 740 turbo sedan has a limp headliner (of course!) After looking at ways to repair and fretting somewhat over the task, it dawned on me that a headliner from a later model 940 might fit. Has anyone tried getting a headliner from a wreck and re-and-reing?

THanks

Ken - 90 740turbo, aw71, jet black, totally stock 'cept r134 conversion, 178000 kms.

I performed the same 'screw pin' repair that is described by another respondant. It works like a dream. I think they were called upholstery pins? They had a little plastic head and a screw pin, and you just screw the pin up into the headliner board. As suggested if you put them in there in a thoughtful way (I put mine in a grid) it looks damn good.

Since the fabric was intact but drooping on my 87 760, I used spray adhesive around the edges and the sunroof, and twist pins I got from the sewing department at WalMart. Worked great, the twist pins go into the padding and hold tight, even give it a nice look if you pattern them.

I don't think you would be gaining much if anything. All foam backed headliner material is going south at some point. If you should find a decent one once you start handling it and getting it out of the car, transported, and into yours I would guess it would be trashed.

Don't fret repairing the headliner. There is a kit you could buy at IPD, otherwise just use 1/8" (can't use 1/4") headliner fabric and 3M brand headliner adhesive. You will have to remove all the old orange foam before putting on the new headliner. As for putting the new one on, we used three people, one holding the headliner up and two on each side gently pushing the fabric to the board. FAQ tells about the sunroof, again fairly easy. The only thing that you would want to do is remove the windshield. There are stories of people who could get it out through the doors, but the headliner is very fragile. If you remove the windshield it makes the job much easier.

Good Luck!

It's actually easier to do a headliner on a wagon, if only because it comes right out the rear hatch.

Having two people is absolutely essential for reinstallation, helpful for removal.

Use splints held in place with duct tape on both sides of the sunroof opening to avoid breaking the board when removing it. Unfortunately this is impossible during reinstallation, as you cut the sunroof opening last of all.

I ended up doing mine twice, having used the wrong glue the first time.

If you have one of those rare cars without a sunroof, the job is MUCH easier.

If you are doing a wagon, ignore the part in the IPD instructions about removing the white trim piece at the top of the windshield. There is no need to.
