Loses power 200 1984

I just bought a nice looking 1984 244 on a deal from a frustrated owner. The car runs nice and then at random times it sputters and cuts out like it loses electrical power. When I drove it home (About 15 miles) it cut in and out on me about three times but continued after a backfire or two. It ran strong in between. The previous owner changed both fuel pumps, Fuel filter, rewired the starter, put in a new alternator. After all this it still “sputtered” and left her on the side of the road twice. I bought it right on the site of this last breakdown and it started right up for me and drove me home with the described symptoms. I paid $300 for the car and drove away fast before she could kick any dents in it. Does anybody have any ideas where I should start?

Thanks!

Don

    Loses power 200 1984

The only thing I can tell you is that most of the pre 1986 244's had major wiring problems, that is why they sell complete wriing harnesses for them. The insulation just disappears from the wires. More than likly you have a shorting wire. I know it is a PITA to find but it can be done with a little patience. You can make your own harnesses if you take you time and follow each wire, but that again is a pain in the rear. Several places sell the wiring harnesses. One other thing you might check is the AMM and the connection to it as well as the connecting wires. Last thing I can think of is that a lot of the 244's also had dist. cap twitches. Changing the cap seemed to solve a lot of the problems....Max :<)
