Alternators 200 1980

What is the standard alternator rating? I'm thinking of upgrading my lighting and may need a higher amp alternator. What is the rating of the high output alternators and how do you tell the difference down at the local PnP?

    Alternators 200 1980

For the model year 1982, the B21A, B23E, B21F Turbo and Diesel had alternators with an output of 55 amps. The B21F CI, LH Jetronic fuel system and B28F had alternators with an output of 70 amps.
The alternator for the diesel had a special terminal labeled W that provided the pulse for a tach.

Son's 81 had a 55Amp. I replaced that with a 70Amp from an 84 which fit right in. The output terminal on the 70Amp was in a slightly different spot on the case, and we had to work the harness to take out all the slack to get the large Red charging wire to connect OK.

I don't think there would be many occasions when you would use the entire capacity of the bigger alternator, but the extra amps at lower RPM's is nice if you have big stereo, auxiliary lights, heavy use of rear window demister, blower, etc.

One more thing - obviously you are taking a chance with junkyard alt's, so try for one with an exchange policy. When I took the PnP 70Amp to an auto parts store, the guy had to thumb through his test machine book at length to see how to hook it up. He then pronounced it DOA.

I didn't want to believe this, so took it to another store of the same chain, where the grey-haired counterman didn't need to refer to a book. He quickly connected it to his machine and said it was just fine. And it's been running for 4 years now on my son's car.

Get a second opinion if it "tests dead".

      I believe the 1986-on 240's all had 80Amp units.

Another tip on junkyard alternators. Look for the ones that are fairly clean and shiny, as they most likely were installed shortly before the car was junked. They tend to stick out like lighthouse beacons in an otherwise dirty engine compartment. I have had some luck in the past finding very clean and shiny ones with the "Volvo Remanufactured" labels still on them. Obviously fairly new units with lots of life left in them. The 100 AMP unit I now have in my 1980 242 was a real find. Still in the Volvo box in the trunk of a 740 turbo ! The guy never got around to installing it. And, at the junkyard I go to, an alternator is a flat price of $20, regardless of condition, make or model car it came out of !

    Alternators ratings 200 1980

    Look up alternators at fcpgroton.com
    Look under 240-engine-electrical
You'll find them listed for different years and what the amps ratings are.

The later years 240s had a bigger alt; I'd guess you could put one on an earlier 240 without mounting problems. But look closely when at the PnP. Or even test-mount one right there on another older junker.

On the fcpgroton site you can also look under 700 + 900 series cars and see what there was. Not sure if they interchange. But I'm pretty sure the 900's had a higher-output alternator than even the later 240s.

      Alternators ratings 200 1980

The standard alternator is a 55 AMP in my 1980 242. I believe later 240's had a 70 AMP. I pulled a 100 AMP Bosch unit from a 740 turbo and it was a pretty easy drop in to the 1980. Had to do some minor but fairly obvious and easy modifications to the big red power wire to conect it to the back of the alternator. The 100 AMP unit is larger, and is a tighter fit than the oriingal 55 AMP, but it does fit.
