I want to say 86 or 87, my 85 had seatbelt mounts in the console. Dan

Hi Dan,
Though I've never owned one, I want to say 86 as well. The pics in the New Car Features manual show the seat heater switches in a console with a cubby.
While I have the book open, I'll list the other new for 86 things that did get a mention:
Modified oil viscosity range showing upper limit for 5W/30 extended to 20 deg. C.
Altered filter and oil change intervals: 5K miles and 6 mos. for highway driving and 5K miles and 3 mos. for all else.
Recommended API 5W-30 SF
New Maintenance Service Intervals chart
Rectangular headlamps!
Central brake lamp
Ignition switch dependent headlamp switch
Thermostatic seat heaters in both front seats
Changed wiper blade drive shaft angle for high speed performance
Electronic speedometer
Temperature gauge "stablilizer" (quotes are mine)
Control unit for shift indicator (M46)
Asbestos-free clutch linings
Type J OD with longer pistons and teflon ring
New rear axle oil part number
Front springs reduced in length by 1mm.
Plastic wheel caps.
Completely modified front end and rear end body styles
Apron-type rear mouldings
Low side mouldings
New bumpers 5mph - makes wagon slightly longer than sedan
New side mirrors w/ replaceable glass
Noise reducing moulding on door edges
New key system (boyfriend who lose key get no new key)
Above includes central locking for trunk (and tailgate?)
Front door foam seal in panel for improved sound system.
Plastic moisture barrier in doors
Backrests and headrests "improved" for more side support
Seat heaters are switched at console
18 body parts are now zinc coated to improve corrosion protection
(notably absent from the list is rockers, but spare tire wells are included)
I know this isn't the whole list, so it would be interesting to continue it...

Hi Mike,
Maybe they had to use the old ones up, or they took the picture in Europe or something. I never had anything 85-88. Missed out on the whole LH2.2 experience, so I have to learn from books and find out from you all the mistakes they made.
Here's the picture - sure looks like that patterned fabric pad in the cubby to me: 86 new car features

Hi Art.
a question for the ages.
i do no one thing, the older ones usually black in color are made of a different material that holds up much better, not as brittle and seem like a softer material with no heater switch cutouts.
good luck

Hi Mike,
I would agree from my experience with the tan ones. One might think auctions would fetch a higher price for intact tan ones, but I'd buy a black or blue one and, if forced to color coordinate it, use a rattle can. Glad the wind didn't get you - rain's headed our way.

The 87 sedan I just sold had center console seatbelts. Our 88 245 has the later style with the cubbyhole.

Hi Mike,
The list for 87 is much shorter:
New plastic battery shelf
New 80A alternator beginning 9/1
Rear wiper relay interval changed from 15 to 10 seconds.
M47: Explains M46 was actually an M45 + type J or P OD, and M47 is M45 + fifth gear.
Front U-joint made of rubber.
Tranny crossmember with rubber mounts (to chassis rails)
New power steering gear, Cam Gear TRW (helical teeth on rack and pinion)
Corona wheels for GL have layer of paint now.
Wagon rear seat cushion removeable
New stronger attachments for rear apron splash guards
Only "minor" changes to wiring diagrams

My 87 wagon has the seatbelt clips together in the center console, thus, no cubby.
