Headlight alignment 200

The headlights on my 240 are out of alignment. I would like to re-align them myself, but don't know the best procedure to follow. What is the best do-it-yourself method to use?

    Thanks! 200

Much appreciate the tips. I think I can handle it now. Last week, I took both headlight out of the car, split the front lens away from the bucket and dried out the moisture. While apart, I managed to polish up the front lenses quite well too. Used silicone seal when reassembling. The worst part of the job was removing the rusted mounting bolts that hold the assembly to the car body. PB wasn't quite enough help, so I resorted to a bolt cutter to split the nuts a tad so they would come off. Definitely not an easy location to access though. Not a job I'd attempt every week unless I enjoyed making total hamburger of my knuckles.

Visit Daniel Stern's site, go to Tech, then to Aim
      http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/aim/aim.html

That will tell you how to get them aimed. Getting to the adjustments and making them work is another story.

There are two white thunb-grip screw heads behind each headlight. One for vertical, one for horizontal. Thea adjustment screws will aim your lights
      IF:
      1) lenses aren't cloudy (cloudy lens gives an unfocused beam)
      AND
      2) screws aren't frozen in their threads

If your lenses are cloudy we can probably start three discussion threads on that. You'll need new lenses or new headlights, or e-code headlights. Or you can try to buff them clear again with compound etc. As I said, that might be worth several discussion threads. You'll likely also need a Dremel tool to cut off the rusty nuts/screws holding the existing assemblies onto the radiator support bracket. The screw heads are mostly inaccessible so PB Blaster won't help, you need to cut rusty nuts off if you want to get the headlights out.

If the adjustment screws are stiff, don't put Vise-Grips on the white knurled rings. You'll end up with the grips spinning and the screws still stuck. Instead, grip what you can of the screw threads with skinny Vise-Grips and get them to turn. PB Blaster will help. I bought a pair of needle nose Vise-Grips once in a package deal, when I didn't know that I would need them. It was absolutely worth it.
