1991 240 hard to crank......hesitation on stop and go 200 1991

was cranking and running just fine have noticed a hesitation when going from a dead stop, or a very slow down. last few days does not want to crank, when it cranks i cant give it any gas, or it sputters out, kinda backfires a little then runs at idle, well today it would not crank and run started twice but would not run. So where do i start?

It does sound like possibly a failing Air Mass Meter (AMM). This series of fuel injection will sometimes behave better with the AMM disconnected when the AMM is what's causing the problems.

With the key off, disconnect the AMM in the LF fenderwell area. It's a black plastic tube with a single 6-pin plug to it and the big air hoses to the intake attached to it. It's normally bolted to a bracket in the LF fender right behind the battery- sometimes brackets do come unbolted however.

Squeeze the metal wire and pull the plug loose. Try to start the car with it disconnected. IF it starts and runs that way, re-connect it and see if the original symptoms reoccur.

Sometimes corrosion occurs in the 6-pin plug and causes headaches for the mechanic... inspect that plug for white or green corrosion.

A new AMM is about $300, a good used one $50 to $100 usually. You can drive the car a bit with it disconnected but it can stall under load, so I do not advise it.

Good luck!

is your ignition system in good order? is your air mass meter working properly? checked for air leaks? fuel pump running properly? fuel filter fairly new? what exactly do you mean by hard to crank? do you mean it cranks but won't start? or the engine won't turn over when you turn the key? if its the former i'd check fuel delivery, if its the latter i would think that there is some sort of electrical problem. of course the fuel delivery problem could be electrical... my 240 kept burning the fuel pump fuse, i think maybe because i disconnected the buzzer fuse, who knows..... anyway, good luck.
