Nut size 200 1986

I've been to Lowes twice and still do not have a nut to go on the small post on the alternator. Anyone know what size it is? this is the one that holds the small 12 volt feed wire.

    Nut size - a minor PITA? 200 1986

    Unfortunately wrenches and other such tools are usually cheaper per each when you buy a set. That system usually ends the problem you have enountered.

    My metric first sets were a (1) 1/2 inch drive sockets in 8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-17mm sizes.

    (2) 1/4 inch drive very small sockets (10mm is about halfway from smallest to largest).

    (3) Combination set (open+box end) smaller sizes and larger sizes, up to 17mm.

    I have added to that boxful over the years, but the practice of buying in sets has always paid off with fewer extra trips to the store. For the (1) and (2) sets I already had an old toolbox with the ratchet drives and SAE sockets.

    The smallest nut on the alternator is - as I recall - 8 mm. Use a box end. Don't loose the nut, unlike others on the car there are only a very few to cannibalize. The 10mm nuts and bolts abound.

    Consider a variable speed electric screwdriver, maybe later. Mine has been valuable in odd orientations, like the screws holding the brush set onto the alternator rear plate.

    Good Luck with all your Volvo work. Hands are happier in vinyl gloves, too. Less skin lost in scrubbing and no grease under the nails. $8/box of 100 at ACE hardware.

    They vary so you will need to measure it with a micrometer, drill gage, etc
    to be sure. It is probably metric. The big ones are usually 6mm which is
    a little smaller than ΒΌ" and requires a 10mm wrench.

      Don't know if you have one of these stores left

      We have two True Value hardware stores and they seem to carry a good selection of Metric nuts and bolts. When the new water pump came without studs, none of the auto parts houses had them. They sent me to True Value and the selection was quite good.

    Hi Simon,

    I've made many, many wasted trips to Lowes, and will undoubtedly make many more, as my memory of what they carry fades. Sometimes I'm just unhappy about empty bins.

    The nut you're after is a standard M5. It will have a thread pitch of 0.8mm and the normal hex size is 8mm. Lowes has spotty metric coverage in our town.

      The girls who work there think I'm stalking them!!! Any project entails six or seven daily trips to Lowes. Thanks for the nut info. I won't ask how you know but it still amazes me!!

        Hi Simon,

        That was pretty good about the Lowes staff. Yes, they'll get to wondering if you bring a nut to the counter every hour or so. Somehow I picture that as much more enjoyable than searching the gravel under the car with a magnet (it probably lodged on top of the brake lines along the crossmember), or worse, combing the grass!

        Since you didn't ask, I'll tell anyway. I was pretty sure of the stud size from memory, but I knew it would only take me 10 minutes to be certain, since I have a collection of alternator parts and a couple spares. I miked it with my Chinese metric micrometer and double checked the pitch with my US made thread gage, also metric. All Bosch I've run into are the same.

        I thank you for sanitizing that old saw about the daily performance.

        M5 = 8mm hex

        M6 + 10mm hex

        M7 (rarely used) = 11mm hex

        M8 = 12mm or 13mm hex, nearly all nuts are 13mm

        M10 = 14mm, 15mm, or 16mm hex

        M12 = 17mm hex generally

        Specialty fasteners, including high strength and fine thread pitches, will very often have non-standard head sizes that differ from these. Also they may vary by manufacturer. Volvo generally uses M8 bolts on the engine that have 12mm heads. Volkswagen used nearly all 13mm heads for similar service.

        Also note that installing new nuts or bolts even in the same sizes can occasionally mean a different size bolt head. COnfusing sometimes when you've still got the "right" socket on your ratchet...
