I'm gonna venture slightly into gray areas of my knowledge of old Volvo's and say that perhaps the 444 cars didn't use the Dana/Spicer axle, or perhaps even all the originally B16 engined cars (-62?). I think a quick visual examination of the car would provide an answer, I think the previous diff (ENV) was the style where the whole front section of the unit, including the pinon gear, bolts onto the front side of the rear axle. The Spicer style uses a one piece front side, with a sheet metal plate bolted on the back.
And beyond that fact that it is a spicer, various Spicer models have different axle spline counts. So while Dana/Spicer 27 carriers from other application *might* fit, it's not always a guarantee. I forget the details of what spline count most Dana 27 equipped Volvo's used.

I have a limited slip diff in the basement that I need to put in the PV at some point...

My 1961-62 PV544 B-16 has the Dana 4:56. Just installed new pinion seal. I went to Napa Auto Parts and asked for a Dana 27 seal. They got it off the shelf. Car is tiled a 62 but with the serial 328851 I think it a hold over.
