ZF/1800 Steering box in a 122? 120-130

I noticed that the steering box in my parts 1800E is different (ZF) than the box in my 122S. Except for the steering hookup, they looks identical. If so, is there any advantage to putting a 1800E style steering box in a 122S?

There's a safety advantage -- the E/ES steering shaft is collapsible in a crash. The 122 shaft is meant to break in a crash, but it's not nearly as effective.

I don't know if it would actually fit, though, or whether the steering wheels swap. Do some measuring before attempting anything.

I'm planning on doing the same swap. Based on my measurements, it should fit using the 122 top steering colum and 122 rubber disc. There is a possibility that small amount of the sheet metal needs to be grounded down above the upper a-frame because the collaspible section of the 1800 column swells out there. Really don't know until somebody trys it.

If you get it to fit, let us know.

      Paul

Here's a couple of pictures to show how the 1800E column might have some problems.

        Hope it helps.

I've been interested in this question for some time, 1800 boxes being increasingly hard to find. It looks as if the lower part of the box is the same, but the splines on the upper shaft are different for the 122 larger) and the 1800 (smaller). Of course, the later styles with the two breakaway prongs need their own uppers.
