Ignition switch or Starter? 900

Hello,

My 93 940 has for the past week done the following:

Sometimes it will start no problem like nothing is wrong.

Other times, when I turn the key nothing happens, then if I turn it back off and turn it again it will start right up, or sometimes it will take two "turn off/on twists of the key to get it to start. I hear the solenoid click when it doesn't start on the first one or two tries. Which I guess just answered my question about the ignition switch - it must be o.k. So any thoughts on the starter? voltage regulator? etc. Someone told me the starter can get a "flat spot" that won't allow it to engage and the first tries turns it a little etc.?
Thanks,
Mike

Much more likely is a neutral safety switch that's not allowing the starter to crank.

This switch is mounted on the shift lever assembly. The thing that can happen is that the shift lever ends up in a slightly different spot due to a bad transmission mount, or bad shift linkage bushings, or both... then the shift lever's position when in Park is a little off.

The switch can be adjusted so it lines up a little better. It's designed to allow you to start in Park or Neutral, but not R or D. I would look closely at the shift linkage and the trans mount to make sure those things are ok.

Try starting the car in Neutral and see if the same problem occurs. My guess is it won't.

    Good luck with it!
