93 960 Transmission shifts into neutral 900

I have a 1993 965. Periodically when I stop, my transmission shifts into neutral. I have tried a couple of ways to get it out of neutral: one being shifting it into reverse and then drive again and also by pushing the "w" button on the ESW switch. After pushing the "w" button, I then push the "s" button and then the transmission goes into drive. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

Scott

Are you sure it is going into neutral? Could it be just staying in 3rd gear? When the PNP switch is failing sometimes it can stay in 3rd at a stop. The feel maybe that it is neutral because the car does not move forward very easily.
When this is happening, are you using a light foot on the gas pedal? Can you get the revs above 3500 rpms?

      DanR:

It happened again and I tried what you suggested. You were right. It was in 3rd gear and then it shifted to 1st after a short period of time. I also checked the OBD1 readout for mode 1 and it gave a code of 1-1-4. This code says that there is a program selector open circiut or short circuit to ground. I am not sure what the program selector is. Are the symtoms and readout code related or are they different problems? Thanks.

Not sure what "program selector" is either, the gear shift? Really sounds like your PNP (neutral safety switch) is bad. The cold weather makes marginal switches cross the line. You could see if rowing the gear selector back and forth thru the whole range 20 -30 times and see if that helps for a while. Cleans off the dried up grease in the switch. Even if it that works, it is on borrowed time, and eventually the engine may not start.
