Floor rust questions. 200 1988

I recently pulled the carpet from my 240 passenger and driver side. I had a leak from both sides up at the top of the dash. You could see small rust spots in the seams at the top of the dash (firewall?). Anyway the carpet was wet and the metal plate the wires go under was totally rusted. I also noticed some spots where bubbling of the undercoating on the car in these areas and under the drivers seat. Was this caused by my inside leak or from the bottom of the car?. I really want to correct the problem before I lose the floor. How long would that take? I sealed and coated the firewall seams inside and out using rubberised paint. I also painted those lower sills inside the car where the water seems to sit.

Paint won't hold up under the carpet. The rust will come through again unless you live rust free area.

The only success I have had is to coat the inside of the floor pans and rockers with a rust proofing. You could use commercial brands, but I use a mixture of motor oil and grease. The oil penetrates into the seams and the grease sticks where it is put. I then put a layer of 9 mil plastic over the whole floor. This seals in the grease and stops water from snow etc from getting to the floor. The sound proofing and carpet go over the plastic. There is no smell and you would not know it is there unless you hauled up the carpets.

It works great. I don't even bother removing rust, since the oil/grease pretty much stops any further rusting.

I have two holes in the floor of my one week old to me 1986 760. I will fix them this winter and hopefully won't discover more holes.

Anyways, I am a big believer in oil and grease to decrease rate of rusting. I was planning on putting oil or grease on the floor also. Probably take off the soundproofing altogether. Makes for a lighter car:)

But if you put plastic on the floor, won't it trap humidity?

        Hi,
first: the water probably doesn't come from the firewall seam, but either from the windscreen or the wiper motor mount. I had both...
Second: instead of using engine oil and mineral oil grease, search for lanoline oil (made out of lamb wool). Here in Germany they sell "fluid film", based on this stuff.
The advantage is that it doesn't absorb humidity, and it even penetrates rust under water. In addition I'd use some undercoating wax, to give further protection.
Third: All this only makes sense when it's not too rusty yet. Otherwise the mentioned procedure will solely help slowing down further rusting.
If it's a 240, and if you already see "some" bubbles in the undercoating, be prepared for some welding.

I have used fluid film on the underside of my car with mixed results. It doesn't seem to have that much staying power. My older 240 has had regular fluid film undercoatings, and it has several areas of rust. The floor of this car is oiled as I described, and it has no rust.
I still use fluid film on the external surfaces because it is not supposed to be environmentally friendly, but I don't think its as good as motor oil. Look around your tranny tunnel, where the ouput shaft seal most likely leaks a bit. I will bet there is not a spot of rust.
