Thanksgiving Tip 200

Hello All,

Have a happy thanksgiving, and be especially thankful (I know I am) to all the people on the brickboard who offer their time to help you and me. Some of these people have learned through countless hours of tough work, ready to pass their experiences on to us. Others have special interests and talents that are anxious and willing to share their knowledge with us. I'd like to offer a tip I've learned:

I'm not sure when (I'm guessing at '90), the 240 line dropped the underhood light. It's a mercury switch and I think a 10w bulb with assembly that is especially easy to hook up that mounts on the rear edge of the hood. The JY's are loaded with them and since my 93's never included this light, I have hooked them all up on all. While you're in the JY, pick up some wire sheath, and the clips to make a first class job. You can obtain power from a little auxiliary box near the battery, and Radio Shack sells fused connectors.

Happy Thanksgiving all,

Marty Wolfson

I think that you have the year correct. My '90 had one but my '91 does not.

Yeah, it's a good idea to add one. My 92 does not have one, but my wife's 90 745 does. The 92 sedan uses a plunger in the trunk lid to activate that light, and it works well. Wonder why they didn't do that for the hood?

I've done this on both my '92 245 and my '92 945-- those lights are nice for checking oil, etc. in the fall/winter evenings when the commute home is almost always in the dark...

Tell me more about the fused connectors you got at Radio Shack!

    Thanks!

      Herb,

See what I mean about how people share their knowledge. Ken's post below says it all.

re the fuse holders at Radio Shack, get 'marine-grade' instead .... 200

I'd avoid the cheap fuse holders from Radio Shack for any installation under the hood. The reason is that their not weather proof (they're mainly indoor equipment suitable). I always use marine-grade (i.e., seawater rated, from boating shops) because where I live (and maybe you, too) in winter there's a lot of salt spray on the roads and this promotes corrosion -- such RS stuff corrodes and looses contacts. There are fine marine-grade fuse holders that, when closed, seal the fuse securely against any salt/moisture!

The lights might have been omitted for environmental reasons, because of the mercury in the switch. I happened upon a list of instruction for 'safe disposal of toxic waste' from dismantled cars, listing all the places it can be found. All the Volvo mercury switches were listed.

So the junkyards are probably quite happy for you to take them.

The earlier lights did NOT have mercury switches! They were a spring-loaded
tab against part of the hinge.

240 lights up until they were deleted did use a small mercury switch, both for hood and trunk lights. The older cars I'm not sure about, my first was a 75 164E....
