M46 shifter knob removal 700 1986

My latest acquisition's overdrive didn't work when I got it. Now that I have finally gotten around to looking into it, I was thrilled that after I popped the little cover with the shift pattern off the top of the shifter, and then pried the overdrive botton out, I was able to get the dash to say 5 by putting a wire between the two wires for the switch. So switch is bad, right? No. If switch is put in carefully and touches the contacts, it trips and untrips the light too. (I sure will be disappointed if the overdrive itself still doesn't work when I actually drive it.)

But here's my question. I think the switch wasn't working because the spade connectors on it were not attached to the wires and don't see any way to connect them. They are down in the tunnel formed by the shifter knob with no slack to pull the wires out. I don't seem to be able to unscrew the knob, or pry it straight off, but I didn't try to hard so I don't break it. The FAQ desn't address removing the knob. So what's the trick?

Happy Thanksgiving All.

Like the others said, it just pulls off, but it won't twist off because it's keyed. If you decide to replace it, FCP sells a replacement aftermarket for about $9. Dealer gets like $27 for it, but it's more like the original. Replacement is kind of harder and smaller. you may like it better- feels a bit more sporty.

There will be a bit of slack at the bottom- it may not be easy but there's not really anything holding the wires except friction. I've found many of these which need the terminals squeezed tighter to fit the switch. You might want to try holding the terminal up using a bent paper clip or something, as you fit the switch into place. May need needle-nose pliers to pull wires up a bit.

I doubt the switch has broken, if it feels ok. The problem I've seen is usually connections. Also, the OD relay may have seen better days- they're subject to the same failures often discussed for automatic overdrive cars.

Thanks to all of you. I will let you know how it turns out.

I may not get back to this today since I have the driver's seat out right now for other reasons and need to drive the car tomorrow. I did see some sad looking wires coming off the tranny under the car, so I won't count on the OD working just because the light is on. But I do hear a click when the switch is in contact and the light goes on or off. Click might be the relay, but it sounds like it's below me so I can hope it's the selenoid.

I really would rather not remove the knob if I don't have to, but my initial pulling didn't get the wires to come out at all and there is no room to reach down and hold them when the switch is close enough to touch them.

Knob is friction fit. Use a wrench that just fits over the shift tube.

Drive that wrench upward with a mallet. I tied a plastic bag around the knob to the shift tube, then drove the knob off. Kept everything in one bag instead of all over the interior.

Wires come out the bottom passenger side. Remove rubber boot from buttons into tunnel under carpet. Pull up and off tube. You'll see hoew the wires are routed.

I'm here to help with OD if it does not work when you test drive after dash light.

Knob comes straight up,and is keyed into the
notch on the drivers side of the stick.
Try the nylon rope/ weight trick to pull it off.
But it should come off with some wiggling and
    pulling by hand.
Then wiggle shifter when pulling wires up.
You say the female spades are on the switch/broken wires?
    Or simply unplugged?

Switch is just unplugged, nothing is broken, but the wires don't "push back" to allow the switch to simply be inserted and don't pull out at all to hold them, attach them and then reinsert switch.

Thanks for your help with the knob. I will try it after turkey.

It is just glued on. It is geared, so it won't turn without breaking the guts. If I remember correctly, the Haynes manual covers removal. But I'm at work without it.
