more transmmission questions,,, 200 1993

I posted last week regarding replacing the transmission on my newly purchased '93 240 (and received a lot of good advice ...THANKS!). The PO told me that it slips and won't go into reverse. When I picked it up, I didn't notice any slipping, although when I went to back up it was as if it wasn't in gear. I revved the engine and it suddenly jerked into reverse spinning the tires.

I have a 240 donor car that I could pull one put of ... but before I do that I want to make sure it is necessary. what could it be, how to diagnose the possibilities? Maybe I am just wishfully hoping to get out of the exchange.

Any information would be appreciated.

    Have you done the basics? .... 200 1993

    You made no mention of what you might have already tried or simply looked into(if anything)? For example, have you properly checked the fluid level in the transmission? And what condition is the fluid (e.g., cherry red, dark brown, etc.). This (owner neglect) is often the root cause of many tranmission problems, as the transmission itself, without a turbo, is relatively robust and long lived with reasonable care.

    Let us know what you've found, and we'll go from there....

      I am sorry to have left out the important stuff ... DUH! I have tried the flush thing and the fluid is all new and at proper level. What came out was just a little off color, but didn't smell burnt.

      That is about all that I had the knowledge to try. I had it in my mind that the band was gone , but when it spun the wheels, I changed my mind.

      Can it be the pump or sticking valves? Is there any way to run it down without taking the thing out and apart? Sorry if I sound ignorant, but I guess when it comes to transmissions, I am very ignorant!

      Thanks for the reply! And again I'm sorry for leaving out the important stuff!

        This sounds like check ball erosion in the valve body. Someone else posted on this perhaps 3 to 6 months ago. Search the forum for valve body and you might find the posts. If this is the issue with your trans, it can be resolved without pulling the tranny... can be fixed from underneath with the trans pan off.

        ps. I have not personally done this job, just going from BB post memory and waiting for it to happen to mine!

          Thanks for the advice! I printed the "servicing the valve body" from the FAQ's and it looks like a pretty complex undertaking. I may have to take it to a local shop and ask them how much to do the procedure.

          Thanks again;
