Dead 240: fuel pump, filter or ??? 200

Hi. I'm sure somebody has had this problem. My '88 240 has been running great. Today it "burped" a few times and died about 5 minutes later. There was no strange noises or smells. The first thing I did was swapped relays and the fuse under the hood. After repeated attempts to start I couldn't smell the first whiff of gas. I assume that it's not getting fuel. I read my Bentley and it gives the most likely problem as a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. It's hard for me to believe that a fuel filter could get that bad. What sounds most likely? Is there something else I should look at? Thanks.

You tell them Bruce... 200

I love a technical answer..It actually explains the circuit for a better understanding of how the system works instead of the usual explaination of just do this or do that and it will work.. Bruce, thanks a bunch and keep it going..Between you and Art who needs a Bentley,, Saved me some money,,Seriously I think this is a lot better way of repairing something when you know how it works. It leads to understanding what a system does and how it effects other systems in the vehicle. I have a very large three ring binder that I use to keep all the tips, pics and bricksters diagnostics on the beloved 240 series. If I had not had this notebook with all the pics and explanations in it when I replaced my first blower motor I would have been so lost I would have sold the car and be driving a Saturn today...Max:<(

Dead 240: fuel pump, filter or ??? 200

UPDATE: Thanks for the responses. It's now running again. When I checked the under the hood fuse in the dark, it was good. In the light of day, I found that one of the wires came out of the white fuse holder. It was also a corroded mess. I cleaned it all and wrapped it with electrical tape this past summer. I see that ipd has a replacement for the whole fuse holder. I will be replacing it. It must have proven to be a poor idea as I noticed that my 1991 240 doesn't have it.

Did you check the fuel pump fuse in the fuse panel inside the car??

First try to get the pump to run.. Jump the right side of the prepump fuse to the right side of the main pump fuse. this will get the pump to run.

Common LH 2.2 FI fuse misunderstanding 200 1988

"Did you check the fuel pump fuse in the fuse panel inside the car??"

The only active FI fuse in the panel is #4, for the tank pump.
Fuse #6 is not wired to anything in U.S. LH 2.2 cars. It is used for Kjet in places like Malaysia.

"First try to get the pump to run.. Jump the right side of the prepump fuse to the right side of the main pump fuse. this will get the pump to run."

I recommend jumping between the Left sides of those fuses because it replicates the normal current flow (Fuel relay 87/1 to fuse #4 input side). This leaves fuse #6 out of the circuit, as it should normally be.

If you jumper Right sides, the (abnormal) current flow is:
Directly to the Tank pump, unfused.
• Thru fuse #6, then thru the fuse #4 backwards to the (normally unfused) Main pump.
• Although jumpering Right sides will usually work, it has the potential to introduce problems in the Main pump circuit (fuses #6 AND #4 and their contact terminals).
