Filled up the car with gas tonight, averaged 22.5 MPG (80% highway @ 80 MPH), only person at the gas station checking the oil...
Currently running Shell Rotella 15W40 with a genuine Volvo oil filter (Made in Germany) and when I checked the oil it wasn't down even a fraction of an "X" mark on the dipstick! I understand NEW, $60K Corvettes, are using 1 quart per 1,000 miles and the owners are going ape sh!t...
Will change oil in a week or two with Castrol 10W30 for the winter.

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 245K looking forward to 300K badge. >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

Nice...
A word about the Corvette; the oil comsumption is a design thing. They use very low tension piston rings... for the lowest possible parasitic loss.... hence the oil issue...!

Good engines. no doubt. I am just short of 300K miles, I change the oil every 3000 miles. I use 10-40 Castrol Dino oil all year round and I burn no oil.
American Auto makers can do it if they wanted to... but they choose not to.

you should send out a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs.
I run Shell 5w40 Rotella-T Synthetic in my b230. Good winter oil. Great additive pack. Strong performer in any car.
I'll change again in the dead of winter to Penzoil Platinum Synthetic 5w30.
Good to see you get no oil consumption with the 15w40.
What about the 10w30, any consumption?

I think I used 1/4 to 1/2 qt last winter.
I don't drive it as much as I used to, Wife got a new loaded (except 4WD) 4Runner in 2004 and we seem to use that all the time to haul stuff and go places. Used to drive 20K yr, now down to 7K year in the Volvo.
I'll keep tabs this winter and report back.
I have NEVER had to add oil to this car. The few times it was almost a qt low, it was time to change the oil. On all the cars I take care of, if it is within 500 mi of an oil change and the oil is low, I just go ahead and change it.
I keep trying to devise something I can mold (like an old plastic oil container) that will fit over the engine mount so that oil won't drip all over it when I remove the oil filter. Currently, I just place a couple of paper towels over the mount.

one day, after some heavy smoke, i thought of putting that paper wax kind of paper on that mount.... seems like with the wax paper the oil might just drip right off...
haven't tried it yet tho and im at 6,200 kilometers.
I run 10dub30 all year round in my 89 240... she doesn't need any oil added evar.
I run 10dub30 formula 1 with synthetic (not synthetic, not semi-synthetic.. just with synthetic) mann oil filter, next change i'm putting in my magnet drain plug.
Oh yeah, and i'm lovin the snow we got here in canada. Freakin awesome.... sidewaysness + non winter tyres is the way to be.

I use Rotella 15W40 here in Florida after years of Castrol 20w50, just turned 220k on the never opened B-21. She only burn less than a quarter of a quart on those long, all day 500 mile trips but I'm sure that's because I'm punching it up 90-100 M.P.H past all the new Folvo pieces of junk just to let em know who's still boss.
