Rear axle seals 700 1989

I'm replacing the bearings on my rear wheels. Is there any difficulty in replacing the inner axle bearing seals? Just push them in with a pipe and they're usually OK?

    Rear axle seals 700 1989

    Hi Paul:

I just changed one of my '91 740's inner seals. Getting the old seal out was a bit of a pain. I did not have a seal puller so I used a curved crowbar to pop it out instead. I was careful not to scratch the inside of the axle housing. The old seal was a tight fit! I drove the new seal in using a cast iron pipe fitting and a hammer. The pipe fitting was slightly smaller in diameter than the seal and drove it in until it seated without damaging it.

Did you need to take the emergency brake off of to get the axle off?

I had to remove the brake caliper, brake disc and wheel locating pin (holds the disc on) as well as the emergency brake shoes. The worst part of the job was cleaning up the mess that the gear oil made all over the caliper, shoes disc, etc.

Thanks for the info. I'll make sure to drain the differential before starting.

I didn't drain mine - some gear lube did come out of the axle tube when I pulled the axle out, but not much.

After I finished I topped it off, drove it for a day then did a drain and refill with Mobil 1 gear lube after I was sure it wasn't leaking.
