940 Front Suspension Noise 900 1994

My 94 940 (with 71K miles) has a suspension noise in the left front area only.
I suspect the strut, but, not sure how to determine whether it is the strut assy, insert, top mount, etc.... When you manually push down the left front of the car, no noise is observed, but, the top mount area of the strut where a rubber bushing is located has play in it. I do not obeserve this play in the
right strut. No fluid from strut is detected. Are the 940 Volvo's notorious
for front strut problems? Any ideas? Thanks!

Finally got around to taking the front strut off. Found the "threaded collar" on the strut insert(that appears to hold the strut insert in place) was loose. This was allowing the strut insert to move up/down w/o compressing and thus allowing the top mount assy rubber to move. Tightened the "threaded collar" and strut insert is no longer loose. Plan on replacing top mount assy anyway. Has anyone seen this problem before (threaded collar loose) and could it be the cause of the front strut noise I was experiencing? Thanks!

Upper strut mount failure. Now is also the time to take a look at the conical strut rod bushings on the control arm down below. See the FAQ.

Sounds like the upper strut mount.
