Which manual to buy? 900 1991

I'm tired of taking the Chilton Volvo manual out from that library 4 towns away.

Looking for opinions on anteing up for either "Haynes's Volvo 940 Service and Repair Manual" or "Chilton Volvo Coupes/Sedans/Wagons 1990-1998".

Any opinions? I've never seen the Haynes, the Chilton has had some useful stuff for me.

Thanx,

There is only one way to go, get the volvo green books. They cover everything that is what the dealer use. For the price of labor these days the books pay for them selves. Anything else is a compromise. If you get the best you won't be disappointed.

I have the Chilton's... it can't suck enough. Note that the one manual is used to cover EVERY car Volvo made from '90-'98 -- FWD, RWD, 4 cyl., 6 cyl. (in short, a nightmare).

Every time I refer to it for a service proceedure, all the illustrations are for the FWD cars, and the part that applies to my model is a vague write-up.

I've had Haynes manuals for every car I've ever owned, and I think they are far superior to Chilton's.

Just my 2 cents, arguably worth that.

I first started to use chiltons decades ago (for domestic cars)......then their quality went down the shitter. Bad diagrams, info not clear, etc. etc.

My Haynes for my previous 240's were superior. So, stick with Haynes even if you have to get the UK version. Use chiltons' only as a last resort, or as backup if Haynes happens to be questionable in some area (not likely though).

I brought a few slightly used copies of the Haynes over from the UK to Canada and will be putting at least one of them up for sale on eBay. Shall I let you know when I do that ?

Roj,

I was away for a bit, obviously.

If you haven't put these Haynes manuals on eBay yet, let me know.

Being left-handed, I've had to reverse many drawings in my head for them to apply, so I'm willing to give it a shot :).

Thanx,

Here's the Haynes manual,

Link to the Haynes Manual at IPD

Amazon has it for a little cheaper but there’s a three to six week wait.

Yes, it’s for the U.K., but the only difference that I’m aware of is that the steering wheel is on the other side of the car. That, and some unfamiliar terms like boot, bonnet, saloon, estate, etc. I've never seen the Chilton's manual for the Volvo because I stopped buying Chilton's manuals a long time ago, Haynes has always been better for me.

But really, the best manual I’ve found is the FAQ on this BBS or just post a question.

I had looked into buying the Volvo manuals at one point but the price was way too high, though I can’t remember the price right now.

Have you considered the Volvo Service Manual series? Each book covers a system, like brakes, rear suspension, body, etc. The entire series, such as a shop would buy, is too espensive to even consider. Specific manuals can be very helpful. With few exceptions I have the Wiring Diagram manual for every Volvo I have owned. They have proved invaluable.

Visit www.volvotechinfo.com or call 1-800-25-VOLOV to see what's available and the prices.
Get the Haynes, too. Good pix.

Good Luck,

Bob

I don't know where you live, but I believe that Haynes manual is actually for the UK configured cars. Even so, I think I would rather have that book than the Chiltons I use in maintaining our US version 740. I've always liked the Haynes books I've had in the past.

I've had great success on my 91 240 using the Haynes for that model, more so than with the Chilton.
