water-cooled turbo? 700

My '84 760 has the original oil-cooled turbo at 165 K miles. I'd like to upgrade it to a water-cooled, but remembered reading that the drain back line was different. Would everything else work? I wonder if I could have a new drain line made up for it? Thoughts about just having the original turbo rebuilt?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

You might want to track down some T's for the water feed lines as used on the 240 Turbo retrofit kits. They're just pieces of steel pipe with a small T coming off that allows a small rubber hose to run to the turbo. One fits in the lower rad hose and one fits in the hose to the coolant bottle. I've found two sets on junkyard 240Turbos with watercooled turbos. I like them because I don't need the special turbo hoses...I can just cut my existing hoses and splice them in (which I just did when putting a turbo engine in my 240).

The water cooled Garrett T3 is a direct replacement for your turbo. Just use the old oil drain line. You will need to buy the hose connecting to the coolant reservoir, and the lower radiator hose. Both have the small hoses for connecting tot he turbo. Make sure you get the two coolant tubes and fitting to bolt to the turbo.

It is different--the drain is in a different place in the B23 block. Older Garrett water-cooled turbos that will fit, however, but they will require re-using your old return line. I put a Mitsubishi from an '88 into my '84 and had to cut the return line and re-weld it in a different place, but that was for a Mutsu. My welding job worked perfectly the first time, but I doubt I could do it again in a million years. I mot exactly sure what the breakdown is, now that I think of it...

I guess that I should start looking for an older watercooled garett to rebuild. I might post on here in the classifieds section to see if anyone has a spare. None of the local salvage yards here have Volvos.

      Thanks,
      Dave

I didn't think the oil drain line was different. Go with the water cooled if possible. You'll need new lower rad hose, and expansion tank hose. They are 3way..
