headlight crazies 200 1993

I recently replaced the two marker lights (where the Volvo emb. is)and now have only parking lights, fog.the headlights work only in bright mode if you pull back on the dim lever. I've checked and replaced all ceramic fuses, check any obvious wire disconnects, replaced the healight bulbs. could it be a relay, the light switch (although the volvo parts guy said that it would not be the switch, after describing the above}. could there be a connection with my changing two bulbs with ident. ones? PLEASE HELP!

    Hey Bergerbitz,

I just fixed the exact problem you have today on my 91 940.

To make sure we have the same symptoms I'll explan my problems.

When light switch is halfway on the parking lights work.
When light switch is turn all the way on, the headlights fail to light and all the instrument panel, parking, and other lights go off.
When the brights are held on, all the instrument panel and other lights work.

I read through the FAQs, a few differnt places touch on this problem with a few different solutions. It seems that if the brights come on only when held in position, then it is surely the K/headlight relay. I went to go pickup the part from my dealer today ($35), it has a nice big K written on the top, and swapped it out with the old relay. Now my headlights work, hope it works for you too.

    Mike

thanks Mike, Ken... perhaps a coin. but side markers worked for over a year until I needed to replace a bulb... had to fish one bulb unit which fell inside... lost the lense, but replaced it..then the headlights when turning the switch all the way to the right.... no headlights...middle all lights worked except headl.

Like Mike says, it's your headlight system relay.

I don't think the 240 ones have any labels on them besides a part number. Maybe replacements do.

The 240 headlight system is inexplicably UNFUSED! The power comes from a relay turned on by the key in posn 1 or posn 2. None of the fuses on the fusebox affect it. The headlight relay, the big oval can on the LF inner fender, that's the high/low relay, and just switches the power from high to low filaments in the bulbs. The system power comes from that little silver relay.

I know exactly where this is in older cars like my 88. In my 92 (and your 93) they relocated it elsewhere under the dash, and I am not certain exactly where it is. On my 87 a few years ago, the connector to the relay overheated, and caused a bad connection.

Can you tell us exactly what you did to install the fender blinkers? ..... 200 1993

You have a '93, like two of my cars (I put these blinkers, from IPD, on them, too). Didn't have any problem (except getting the emblems off in the first place :-).

Your problem could be a coincidence.... or not.
Can you tell us exactly how you installed the blinkers' wiring? Where did you choose to tap the turn signal wires? Did you choose to wire them so they only light as turn signals, or so they stay on all the time, and and also blink (out of phase) with the turn signals? (although I don't think it would make any difference).

You know, you may have just pulled some connector off its tab?
