1984 240 lost power, then wouldn't start 200 1984

hello everyone:
i just bought a used 240 wagon, and on my way to the junkyard to get new seats, the car (which had been running beautifully other than a tough time idling when cold) began to lose power. it would sag, i'd pull over, rev it up, and it would come back to life.
after pulling a new seat, i came out to the parking lot and had a tough time starting it. it finally started, but once i got it on the road, it lost power again, and i couldn't get it to recover. i pushed it over to the side of the road, checked for spark (bright blue) and waited for my girlfriend to come pick me up. while i was waiting, i cranked it just for fun, and it started right up. so i started driving home again...
it died again, and wouldn't start. but then, after waiting five minutes, started right up.
so i was just trying to limp it off the highway and on to a secondary street. when i pulled into a parking spot, it was idling really rough, and wouldn't rev up when i gave it gas. but it would settle into a nice idle every now and again, stay nice, and then bog back down after a few minutes. now it won't start at all!
any suggestions?
i checked spark and air leaks, and i'm going to check the air mass meter today.
please let me know what you think. is it the fuel pump?

    thanks for all your help everyone.
    turns out it was the fuel line that runs from the transfer pump to the fuel tank access cap. it had half a tank, but couldn't get to any fuel.
    i troubleshooted everything else looking for the problem, so i'm pretty sure i should be running smoothly for a while!

    To check the fuel delivery system, take the gas supply hose loose at the fuel rail. Hold the end in a jar and have someone crank it over. There should be a steady, full stream of fuel.

    Symptoms sound like starving for fuel. Check the fuel pump operation, fuel filter (just buy a new one - probably needs it anyhow), and the fuel pressure regulator. Lots of info in the archives on the FPR.

    Another cause could be a bad alternator brush set, it will also seem intermittent as the brushes only get intermittent contact. Your description of fading and going fits as the battery sitting will slightly refresh itself. The Greens induced eco-wires are a known problem, but so is the alternator as if loaded voltage gets down to 9V, most things stop working. To inspect brushes, just pull battery cable, remove the two screws on the alternator regulator, and pull out. Replace is opposite. Whole assembly is about 25 to 30 dollars if you need it or brushes are 2-3 dollars if you can replace them.

    I'd suspect the rotten wiring insulation problem that 84's and several other years are well known for. Check the condition of the insulation on the five wires coming out of the gray plug located above the valve cover on the fire wall. One of these wires (the fat one) carries power to the ignition coil.

    Check the 25 amp fuse for good contact. Near the battery on the firewall unless it was replaced with another fuse holder. Many have that done.

    Some will recommend a jumper from 4 to 7 on the fuse panel. I aways wire a switch in to the fuel pump relay between 30 (big red) as the main contact and 87-1 and 87-2 using spade lugs. No sparks and safer for all concerned. Flip the switch, wait for the hum and try it. If it starts thats your problem, turn off the switch just after you kill the engine. Drove mine this way to buy a new relay a while back. Keep my red neck fuel pump relay in the back labeled for the next time if needed. If that does not fix it you will have to move onto things like Fuel Pressure Regulator, Fuel Pumps, and such.

    But the fuse and the relay are the next place to go since you have spark.
