Can't drive over 40mph or up hills,,Fuel Puimp?? 200 1989

My 245dl; wagon, has been stumbling occasionally&then one day it would stall trying to backout of my driveway.
I checked out the in tank fuel pump & it wasn't working.
I got another one in the mail from FCP by the next day 2pm.!!
Replaced that&drove away no problem. But then shortly afterward I was going up a hill to get to int.78&the same stuttering started again&then it conked out.
Restarted right away&i was able to drive home&as long as I drive under 40&don't push it.
I can hear the main fuel pump running&changed the filter about 1 yr. ago.
I waiting for a friend to look at it.&put a preesure gauge on the fuel line.any ideas??

HI!
It can be the tank pump, it is main of the end. I´m not any jelouse to all , who have LH 2.4 Jetronic. Motronic is a little a bit inprovement, K-Jet is like a " tank " Fuel injection system. There is just a ONE sensor, if there is something wrong, it does not stop running. But life is just, what all POLITiCS want to be. SORRY my whole shit.

YRS: WEBERMAN.

FUEL FILTER,FUEL,FILTER,FUEL FILTER.
This is the 3rd time in 10 years,I've had a problem w/a f.i.vehicle.aLL Three times mechnics told me the problem was the fuel pump.each&ever vehicle turned out to need a new filter.after only a year.
I bet the pump co.s are the ones making the filter s so that they go bad sooner&mechanics just replace the pump cause it costs more.

NOT SOLVED>,,,,Now I switched in a junker pump.&it starts up&i can drive around 20-30 mph but anything over that&it dies out. Then I have to wait a few minutes&let it idle. Then I can drive off home slow.
I finally got the right seals&so its not leaking at all .
If I can't figure it out tomorrowI'm taking it to a great mechanic I know in town,,,just so I can get back to work.

It may be a mas air sensor. Mine did something similar and that was my problem

Not fuel filter. Can't be. Ya bumped the pump or jostled the check valve while changing it. If ya still think it is the filter, cut it open and show us a picture, then go after your gas supplier like Duane suggests.

Don' believe it for one moment.

I think the fuel filter I had in was a no name. But what other explanation could there be for being dead in the water&then being able to go 70 right after

Nahhhh 200 1989

unfortunately I threw it out that day.I think all fuel suppliers these days are questionable,,,Independants do all the deliveries now.
I've had fuel- fil-ters on my van go bad after only 10-15,000&I don't see why others would go that much longer.
&probably yhere was crud in the bottom of the tank when I did the intank pump that might 've come loose.
Now i'm wondering if maybe the line forward is clogged up somehow. Its sort of acts like fuel starvation after 25-30 mpg now

Where have you been getting your gas?? Have others also had a problem?? Complain to the station owner, BBB, or Company that has their logo on the pumps.

Unless you are driving over 50,000 per year, fuel filters should not clog unless garbage is getting past the stations filters.

Duane's .02$ worth.

You telling us it WAS the fuel filter? That is good news or at least cheap news!
Where are you buying your gas. Is it bad gas that is gumming your filters up?

I put off finding out what the problem was for a mo.or 2,,&&I ran in almost to empty a couple of times, after changing the intank pump I didn't change the filter,,then after driving a little while up a steep hill ,it started stumbling&conking out again. As soon as I stopped it started right up again,
I then drove it at 70 about a 100 mi. a day for about 5 days&then around town for 3 days &then it conked out yesterday&refused to restart at all.Tried for 10 min.I guess it must be the main fuel pump.If i only realized the intank pump was going,,I probably could have saved the main one.
I got one from a junked 740 for $18 so I try to see if that fixes it now.for a while.

It is possible the cat converter is plugged. If you bang it with your hand can you hear the media rattling around? Dan

It may well be a clogged cat or muffler - had a similar experience with a 900T Saab. But just because the muffler or cat doesn't rattle when you hit it doesn't mean it's OK. Things can still be melted and stuffed up even if it's quiet.

Suspiciously a classic problem .... 200 1989

Is your fuel tank below half or less?

It happens when you drive uphill?

If yes to both questions, here's the test: fill up your gas tank.

If the problem goes away, that proves that the problem is the small (2 inch) hose between the transfer pump (a.k.a., intank pump) and the fuel line. You have to pull out the sender in the gas tank to replace it.

Now that I read your thread sounds like a fuel problem for sure. Could be a fualty pump relay or regulator. I had the exact same problem and cured it by changing the fuel filter. You say you changed the filter so i will assume it is OK yet it does sound like a classic plugged filter.
I am not a 100% on how to check the relay but i know it is a common problem with the bricks that the relay can become intermittient and cause all kinds of headaches.
The regulator is on the front end of the fule rail. it has a vaccum line attached to it.I have heard an easy check is to pull the vac line and sniff for fuel present in the vac line. This indicates a failing diaphragm in the reg.

I forgot to add,I can hear the relay click on when I turn the key.
&it HAS been happening w a full tank,,,I will replace that line though when I get a new filter&replace it just to be sure I didn't plug it up in a yr,
