flex-a lite fan for a PV 444-544

Barongrey,
In a post a year or so ago you made mention of using a Flex-a-lite model 1313 fan on your PV. When I tried this I was unable to get the fan between the generator and the fan. When the fan cleared the radiator it hit the generator and when it cleared the generator it hit the radiator. What is the secret?
Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.
Chris

I had one laying around the garage (from an old 140) and tried it on my PV once and had the same results. My car has the B16 nose (despite being an original B18 engined '63 car, front clip was obviously replaced at some point in the past).

Maybe there's just more room around the front of the motor in the B18 nose?

I have an alternator in my car. Perhaps the pulley mount bolt on your generator sticks out a little too far?

Neither the generator nor the radiator (a B19/B20 radiator) had any problems with clearance.

There are several pictures of the setup in the Image Library...Let me fetch them for you.

In this photo on the far right you can see the generator mount, with the offset top bracket. This brought the pulley in line so the belt would fit.

In this photo you can see I have all kinds of space up there.

Here's a picture taken from the other side of the engine. There is more space betweEn the fan and the radiator than the fan and the motor. I once chewed a fan right through a radiator and I try to leave enough space now that it won't happen again!

I hope these photos were of some use to you. I think you'll find that you'll need to modify your generator bolt a little to get the clearance you need. In my case it was a happy accident, I guess!

Steve

I'm doing Ron's alternator conversion this winter so will try the fan again. Thanks for the info.
