Help! Need to remove instrument cluster, FAQ unclear 900 1994

Hey guys, maybe you have pulled a 940 instrument cluster.

Look here...

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ImagesProcedures/ClusterRemoval.gif

The FAQ states push hard and pull toward you with the shaft of the screwdriver.

Mine doesn't budget; either side. One thing that makes it tough is, besides the screwdriver, there is nothing to pull on. The edges of the cluster are seamlessly covered by its surround.

Hmm...as you can see in the picture, the entire black plastic surround is NOT in place. The FAQ says nothing about removing it first; do I have to? If so, how? There are no discernible tabs, screws etc.

Thanks for any advice. Trying to get at the ambient temp indicator lamp.

Greg,

I took that image. It is to show the angle and placement of the screwdriver.

There is a small opening on each end of the surround that you possibly missed.

With the surround in place if you put the screwdriver through the opening and push in on it you will feel the spring action.

Push in with the tool and the surround is simply released- no tugging required. If it doesn't just lift out you have not released the hold on it by the spring clip.

Hi Randy

First thanks for taking that image! I'm lucky you saw the Board today.

Sorry, should have said, I was pulling on the screwdriver with the blade engaged through the slot and steady pressure on the spring. I can easily feel the spring action; have experimented with various degrees of insertion ("all the way" is easiest, but I figured I'd better try other ways, too) and wiggling, different angles...nothing is happening. My car is generally rust and oxidation free in other areas, so I find it hard to believe these particular spring clips are "seized up."

Out of curiosity, how did you get the surround removed? Maybe if I pull it, I can see something I'm missing.

Thanks again

Got it! Oddly enough, when I tossed aside the long, thin screwdriver I was using (8" shaft) and used a standard 4" one, I hit the spot immediately and out she came.

Then I proceeded to make a mess of the Turbo hose; tugging on the hose in search of the joint (which in my car is about a foot of hoselength off the firewall) caused the hose fitting to pop right off the back of the cluster; took a little while to get it all reconnected!

Thanks again for your help guys.

I took the long thin screwdriver out to my car just now. I worked on the right side. I pressed in on the spring and used my fingers on the extreme right hand bottom side to pull out on the surface of the surround. It took more effort than I remembered.

Once you get the spring pushed in far enough the screwdriver makes it difficult to pull the surround towards you but that is what you need to do.

One thing to look forward to is that it is a breeze to reinstall; simply push it into place :-)

Greg,

I think I've experienced the same symtoms as yourself. In my case, it was just a matter of not pushing hard enough. It took about 2 or 3 times as much pressure as what I would have expected. Once you do hit that point though, a slight amount of finger pressure will slide the surround out.
