Breather Box, how hard to get off. 200 1986

Ok, worked on Inga my recently promoted to faithful 245DL. Found oil seaping around the valve cover gasket. Flame Trap time, and yes it was clogged. So now clean and back on. But Inga in her past had the mother of all clogged flame traps that cause the rear seal to blow out and oil to blow every where. Also had a FPR fail and fill all the vacuum lines with gas.

Been reading up on the BB about the chamber where the flame trap sits. Is this hard to remove, and should you clean it and how often? Seems like something that may need attention once and while reading here.

    I have had mine off 2 times now. it is quite easy for me...but then again I have quite small hands. Use an extension and a deep well socket as the other poster suggested...then just pop it off removing it out of the back side closest to the firewall. If you have an issue, get someone with small hands, such as a neighborhood kid to snatch it out of there once you have loosened it. If the breather is really really clogged, as mine was,
    i would replace it...don't forget the o-ring (like i did) or you will end up with a leak that runs down the back side ofthe block and right onto the header...not good. I suggest a dose of RTV silicone on her to ensure a good seal. Check all of the other hoses associated with the system and replace as necessary. these can become problem areas if your system is really neglected, as mine was...my box was completly solid and weighed in at about 2lbs.....not good.....good luck....

    I attempted to take one out of a Totalled car. I ended up cracking the bottom . I didn't have the clearance around a Harness that was in the way.
    If you take the Oil fill cap off and then blow down the hose that leads to that Breather box and can hear air passing up to the oil fill, you are in good shape. no need to clean, passage is clear.

    It is difficult to get at unless you remove the intake manifold or at least the throttle body. It will take a while to clean so a new one may be the way to go. Get a new flame trap kit and o-ring for the box. Good time to clean the throttle body, may need a new gasket. Clean out all the vacuum hoses and intake hose. Good info an all this in FAQ

      I found mine came out quite easily. No need to pull intake manifold or remove throttle body. I removed the air intake hose from the AMM back to the throttle, as well as the IAC and the associated hoses. Removed the short hose to the flametrap as well.

      I used a craftsman 3/8" drive rachet (its short) and a deep 12mm socket to remove the two bolts on the breather box. Lift up, and rotate the top forward, and it comes right out. Installation was no more difficult.

      I cleaned mine with a good soak in solvent and flushed it with hot water until I got good flow through all of the holes. Seemed to work much better after that.
