I'm going to start making the rounds at the local junk yards to find some straight Virgos. I'm currently running the stock 14" steel wheels with plastic hubcaps.
I'm thinking of having the virgos stripped and powdercoated matte black. Does anyone have any experience with this? How long should it hold up? What should I expect to pay per wheel at the junk yard and then for the refinishing?
My current tires are worn down to the wear indicators, so I would like to do this before I have to buy a new set of 14" tires.
Also, what size tires should I buy for the new rims so that the speedo will be correct. One last thing, can I use the same wheel studs that are on the car or will I need a different size. I am about to replace those also.
Thanks, John

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 245K looking forward to 300K badge. >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

My experience with junkyard Virgo's matches Bob Haire's - at least half are damaged. The PnP here charges $14.99 for 15-in aluminum rims and a flat $12.99 for the tire if it's usable. A while back I barely missed out on a full set of good looking, straight Virgos, and it was half-price weekend. All 4 for $30 (plus tires)!
The factory-supplied rubber on the Virgos was 195/60. These will be about 1% 'smaller' than the 185/70-14 on the steel wheels, so less than 1mph difference at 60.
For a while IPD catalogs had a picture of a 240 wagon with Virgos that had been painted the std Volvo steel grey, but with the depressed centre 'valley' on each spoke a darker grey - or maybe black as described by Weberman. Looked pretty nice.

the pic is a "15 volvo rim, the lightest 15" made.
These rims were disguisting when i got them, corroded, scraped up - they were striaght up nasty.
What I did was got these cleaned up at a professional metal cleaning company called redi-strip.. Since these mags were soft, I was told sand blasting would totally pit them, and that glass bead blasting was the way to go.
cost was 25$ canadian per wheel for the bead blasting
I got Red-strip to send them to the powder coater once they were prepped $25 per wheel for the powder coating. Which was a cash deal because he was shooting that colour that afternoon. Its a flat black but the sample tag calls it "Solar Black"

if it is going to cost you more than $45 per rim in your area & another $50 (at least to prepare & powder coat them, you'd be better off buying a set of Voxx rims from IPD.
tirerack.com has three nice sets of rims for you 240 too.
you may want to check flee bay for rim that come with tires. you might be able to score a nice set of virgos w/ tires for cheaper.

HI JOHN !
VOLVO`s factory Rally 240 Turbo`s Gr N used VIRGO`s which were painted black in the center of spokes, ( that low pressed area ) those were quite nice to look. I don`t know if they have never sold them. Some quy`s in here had done it, blast the area and used preamer before finishing. Those are lasting quite well. I have used on VIRGO`s 195/60-15 tires usually, and I think its a good compromiscing of all alternatives. We also use wheelspacers (20mm) in the rear wheels. ( Whitout that those are not allowed for highway use in here ) BTW: I anserwed to Your compliments in " VOLVO-dealer`s...."

Make sure you spin them on the hub to look for wobble or rim dings. Way more than half you find are bent. I would not paint them black, it tends to make them look like steel wheels.

Roll;
Hard to beat the factory paint,it is actually quite a
process to properly prep and paint aluminum.
Powdercoating usually is @50 per wheel.
Media blasting is preferred for aluminum.
It should last quite a while in Texas.
At the junkyards in this neck of the woods,alloy
wheels run 25-45 depending on tire/wheel condition.
Wheel studs are same,are yours stripped?
I run a 1/2 x 20 die on mine to ensure accurate torque.
I heard before and saw on a recent thread torque alloys a little less.
The Virgo lug nuts are best for these wheels.{tall chrome ones}
Sedan? 195-60-15

Here in OC Virgos go around 25 p/wheel, more if you keep the tire. They also charge you extra for the little round logo cap.
I run 205/60R15 - there are tire size calculators available, search the board for posts on the subject, and you'll find a largish amount of discussion of the topic.
