front suspension noises 700 1986

My suspension on the 740T is making some clunking noises at times, and under braking I'm getting a moderate to strong vibration on the left side front. I know that the lower strut bushings are a weak point, but I pulled the wheel and pried on everthing I could and no movement. There is somewhat of a gap on the inner strut rod bushing and washer. But this is not polished or worn looking?? The rubber ( that I can see ) is in good shape. The ball joint and tie rod end is tight. Car has 240,000 miles and no work done to suspension.

I'm considering changing the lower strut rod bushings to the IPD poly versions.

Any opinions or information is always appreciated.

Strut mount bearings perhaps? The big nut on the strut housing slightly loose? Ball joints can be loose and not show much play on the "rocking wheel" test due to being internally spring-loaded. The strut rod bushings can also look OK from the outside and be absolutely thrashed inside. Definitely go poly on the replacement-- I made the swap and have never regretted it. No more shimmy and better road feel.

    Good luck!
