Developed a new horrific noise to the '74, before I start taking things apart and going around with a pipe to isolate it, I thought I'd cull from the collective brain trust.
As soon as the cars starts and idles, a squeal from the rear of the engine, seemingly stronger on the driver's side, begins. It is affected by engine RPM, but can quiet down and even momentarily abate while driving. Does not seem to associate itself with any gear, the tranny has it's fluid looking and smelling nice and it operates normally; as does virtually everything else that isn't electronic.
Began yesterday in heavy rain, and in the 40 miles hence has become extremely aggravated. Initial reaction was exhaust, but it doesn't seem to be the case after shaking and pulling at what I can reach. Belts aren't slipping. Sound is definitely no where near the power steering pump. Could the starter make a squeal? Water pump doesn't seem to be weeping.
Hear squeals all the time on other vehicles, but never on one of mine. So again, I'm clueless.
Thanks, sorry to be vauge, but you never know what you guys have been through.

In one of those rare instances, I'm gonna disagree with George. ;)
I think you should pull the starter and see if the pinion gear is stuck in the flywheel.

New one for me;It was the bottom bolt stripped, and the top
one was just hanging there. The starter was flopping around,
and It sounded like a broken ring gear tooth.
Thanks Ken

If it is starting normally it probably isn't the starter.
Like Ken sez could be the fan clutch, or maybe the water pump,
alternator, etc but those are at the front of the engine.
Couldn't be your HEATER FAN, could it?

Rain;Fan belt? Do you have any belt dressing?
I HOPE it isn't the radiator eating, bad fan clutch goblin!

Well, it went away as I was taking it to where I could work on it. Beforehand though, I had it isolated to the driver's side of the bell housing... which was what made me suspect the BW35 (other than it's reputation).
In any case, how does one free the gear with an automatic? Is this a solenoid issue?
I'll just grab another starter from the yard; I understand it was in use for something like 25 years, hopefully there's plenty to go around.
Cheers -Sean

You may need to spray a little CLC Break Free in the
ignition, after 30 years it may be a little stickey.
