Funny stuff in Water Pump 200

Pulled the Water Pump today (as suspected, no gasket!) and on the inner part of the pump vane-wheel (inside the axle where it's closest to the block) there is some REALLY hard material that looks like a bad JB weld job - it's rusty. Conversely it is on the block as well... Inside the pump chamber there was this same rusty material - Pump works great! But I'm not sure if this is the first horseman for the Water Pump or is this just age...

Oh yeah, went to the sister-site of my favorite junkyard and scored a Nissens Triple Core Copper Radiator for $40 - very clean! Pulled out of a well maintained GL. It has a two-tang sensor on the corner closest to the windshield fluid container... What is this for? Temp? Pressure? Level?

Just wanna know if people get rusty water pumps, too...

Wondering 200

I've read on this board that if one doesn't change antifreeze often enough, it starts conducting electricity. Electrolytic action then eats away at the aluminum head. Wondering if those are the resulting deposits that you are seeing.

oh well - bought a new pump - need I explain the frustration i get from the previous owner's methods of sealing the "original" pump?

The sensor -- it's for temperature .... 200

The sensor is for temperature.

This 3-row Nissens (I put them in all my 240s as soon as I acquire them) is made for a variety of applications -- that's why the hole for the sensor is there even though 240s can't use it. The radiators used to be sold with a plug -- and they notoriously failed and catastrophically lost coolant! So now most vendors include the sensor with their sale, because the sensor screws in securely and can't blow out like the plugs used to.

Can't contribute to the deposits -- it could be a lot of things (bad antifreeze solute, bad quality water solvent, bad ground causing corrosion, etc.).

Rust happens.

It becomes more of a problem when you don't have a good coolant mix.

On the radiator you got, it is probably from a 940, they had a thermal switch in the location you described. Mechanically and thermally, it is identical to a 240 rad, no problems at all.

On the filthy water pump, if the coolant mix was not properly maintained or replaced often enough, rust can build up. Check your thermostat to make sure its in good shape and not all scaly, cheap and easy to check and or replace.

I replaced mine 2 months ago and there was no rust inside. Might have been something they used as gasket material or maybe somthing in the pump itself rusted but there shouldn't be.

In case of radiator it is the temp sensor for I think electrical fan . Not of any use in case of mechanical fan .
