Just added a 242 to the collection, need info on a sunroof. 200 1979

I just bought a '79 242 with 405K miles. (I now own 2 Volvos with 400K+!)

This is my first Volvo with a sunroof. It seems to work mostly okay, but it doesn't like to shut all the way unless you really crank on the handle. It also feels like it jumps gears when I crank it.

It works for the most part, and it doesn't leak. That said, I know nothing about a 240 sunroof, and I couldn't find any info doing a search of the archives.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks as always.

Mark's right on with the advice. There are screws up above the screw for the sunroof handle. Make sure it's all tight and see how that works before you go about replacing anything.

Some lithium grease on the moving parts will probably help.

If there is no lifting action in the back as it reaches the fully closed part of the movement, then the cable ends/lifting levers could be damaged, but my guess is that the lifter pieces can't achieve enough tension to work with the cables slipping.

If it turns out you need parts, a manual crank 740 or any 240 roof should yield a new (i.e. less than 400K) crank gear. Older VW models used roofs built by the same supplier, Golde, so you may find some compatible parts if you're junkyard-shopping.

    Good luck!

The Sunroof doesn't really want to "lift" into the fully closed position, unless I really crank on the handle.

How do the lifting levers work?

Sounds like the regulator is loose, it will be hard to crank and jump teeth when this happens which results in it being out of time. Unscrew the handle, unscrew the regulator (two screws), run the sunroof all the way forward, manually spin the regulator all the way forward and then back it off about one full turn or so, reinstall, install handle, see if you can crank the sunroof closed, so long as nothing is bound up this should do it.
