I was changing the air filter on my car and it had a metal tray with some foam in the bottom section? Never seen this before, is this ok? PO had K&N ( which I threw out) didnt know if this metal frame and foam were part of the KN or stock. Mann filter fit ok,so it didnt interfere with stock cleaner. Just wondering. Petty trival question I know, but dont want any problems. Thanks in advance.

"Petty trivial question"?? nope...it's a good one and along with the responses adds to the huge storehouse of knowledge on this Board.

In our sour natural gas (contains hydrogen sulphide - HIGHLY toxic) processing plants there's a sign on the coffee room wall: "There are no stupid questions - just stupid mistakes"

Look the foam over carefully. The foam fell apart in our '90 744TI and clogged the air filter.

For that matter, so did the foam in the headliner!

Check the FAQ.

On my 940 that was the factory setup. Its there to reduce noise more than anything else. you can pull it out and clean up the airbox, mine had leaves and various junk that had found its way in over the years. Some folks will tell you to get rid of it as it isnt really required to operate the car and may cause more restriction in the intake. I would leave it in unless your goal is to increase performance by doing some other modifications with exhaust, turbo etc.

Thanks very much. I will leave it in place. this car is nice and quiet, so I should try to keep it that way. I did block off the heat from the exhaust side to protect the AMM.

Good idea, I should have thought to tell you about that warm air intake. Its my understanding that alot of them dont operate correctly anyway, and wind up getting blocked off for that reason but it also isnt something that is required to operate the car, my 940 turbo didnt even have the warm air setup on it.
