Just replaced a turbo on my 87 745. There is a bracket under the manifold which I assume is on the 89 also, that needs to be unbolted.
Mine has the Mitsubishi turbo and the oil feed line should be completely removed and requires removal of the filter adapter / cooler assembly.(might be time to replace those o-rings?) I actually left the line in place and split the turbo, which is relatively easy with a TD05 Mitsu since I didn't have fresh o-rings.
Some later turbos can be unbolted with the manifold in place. The Mitsu's need copper washers for the banjo fittings and a gasket and seal for the drain tube.
Go to FCP's site for an excellent breakdown of both Mitsu and Garret turbos and related parts.
I went with the Victor (Carquest) gaskets (they were free) on the exhaust manifold, the previous gaskets were also aftermarket(McCord) and lasted over 310,000 mi.
Be sure to soak all fasteners with PB Blaster or your favorite penetrating oil well in advance of the actual job and it would be a good idea to have new studs and nuts on hand.
Use extreme care when backing off the nuts, the last you want to do is break one off in the head!
