clunk when turning steering wheel - tie rod ends? 200 1993

When the father-in-law's 240 is parked and I turn steering wheel back and forth (steering column unlocked) there is a clunk from the passenger side wheel area under the car. (happens both directions of the steering wheel). Not noticable when driving. Steering wheel only need be turned a 3 or 4 inches.

Is there a tie rod end going bad or something else?

Thanks,

Mark

You should be able to feel looseness in any of the mechanical joints with your hand on them. Turn the wheel 90% of the way to the right, and reach in to grab the tie rod or the ball joint.

With another person moving the steering wheel back and forth just a couple inches, you should be able to identify any component with play in it. The inner tie rod ends often wear before the outers- these can be hard to identify because the rod's joint is inside the rubber boot on the rack.

You should still be able to feel where any play is happening. Replace any part with looseness in it.

If nothing turns up, replace the big bushing at the rear of the lower control arms. They're like $8 apiece, and you can remove by collapsing them with a hammer, then driving in a new one. The bigger your hammer, the faster this job goes!

    Good luck.

Could be a lot of stuff - tie rod end, ball joint, A-arm bushings, or even the strut or strut bearing; remotely, even a loose brake pad. Have a helper turn the wheel while you put your hands on different components to isolate the clunk.
