Draft 444 Reassembly Order 444-544 1958

Good evening all. I've been busy working on the proper "reassembly order" for my 1958 444. This will be used once I get the body back from the shop, hopefully within the month. The draft list is below. It is fairly rough and I am sure I am missing many items but I thought I'd throw it out there to you experts to review. I'd love to get any hints, tips, etc. on the order and if I should install anything differently - before or after other items. Any help and discussion would be greatly appreciated.

Draft 444 Reassembly Order 444-544 1958

Hi Tony: I'm sure the sequence will be obvious as you start the re-assembly process. The only suggestions I have are:

Install the front grill before you install the rad. I think there are some screws in the middle of the grill, that need to be installed from the back (radiator) side. I'd also put the mats in last, since you will be doing a lot of moving to get the dash, headliner and interior parts installed. You will find the rubber slippery and a chance you could scuff the rubber. Are your brake shoes and backing plates already on the axles?

Have fun and take your time, working to the point things don't go on well, then walk away, do something else, then start fresh next day.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the tips Cam. Much appreciated. I guess I'm just a little bored and anxiously awaiting the return of the body since it has been gone for almost a year now. I'm trying to do something productive and keeping my mind on the car. If I at least have a good outline to follow, it should make things a little easier during the process. :)

Yes, the brake shoes and plates are complete. I considered leaving off the hubs and doing that after the axle was installed, but figured I should be able to install as one unit with the help of a friend.

Thanks again!

looks like you about covered it

Do your fenders and doors have chrome mouldings on them?

If you plan on installing speakers and a modern radio, you might want to do this before putting the back seat in and rubber floor mats.

Thanks Belinda.
Yes, I have chrome mouldings on the fenders and doors.
No plans to install speakers in the doors, but will probably do something in the rear deck. Thanks for the reminder.

Draft 444 Reassembly Order 444-544 1958

i put my spaekers up under the dash, theres plenty of room and they are out of sight,, i also fit a second set under the front seats!! this way you dont have to cut any of the panels to get them in and they are totaly out of sight,, as for the headunit (cd player) rather than have a modern one on view spoiling the dash, or having a period radio that wasnt up to much, i made the chrome plate that covers the radio slot into a drop down hinged piece by gluing small hinges to the bach and bolting them to the dash, (small holes) its kept up by a strong magnet glued behind the chrome flap, then i custom fit the head unit behind the dash so the front is flush with the dash rather than sticking out, it looks and works great,,, you loose a bit of base response from the speakers because they are just in the "air" rather than boxed into a door for instance but its worth it for the luxury of music!!.. i put a base subwoofer in the boot but you dont need one.
