My 240 sounds like a diesel 200 1988

Mainly when I first start the car it knocks pretty bad. My co-workers have asked me if I drive a diesel. I've read here that sometimes this can be caused by the piston "skirts" until they expand, or something like that.
Overall the noise tapers down some after warm up. I'm running 20w50 oil. Maybe oil pump is not working properly? I'm running 20w50 because of the age of the car.

Also does anyone know where I can purchase an aftermarket header? My header pipe has a crack and I thought I'ld upgrade when I replace the part.

Thanks!

Even a pinhole at the exhaust manifold will sound like a cummins diesel! Get that fixed with a new pipe from the junkyard 10-20 bucks. 20-50 is too much, try 15w-40 (I like rotella), less viscous oil allows for better oiling at start up and it might save you some mpg's. I think you're confusing that "piston slap" with that exhaust leak - they sound similar.

This will raise some eyebrows but it worked for me. Try adding an extra quart of oil. This will deaden the knocking from piston slap.
Its easy enough to take back out if there are problems....which I doubt.

Consider switching to 15W-40 oil, which is the recommended weight for most temperature ranges (Owner's Manual specifications). It will pump up quicker, and probably do just fine in a high-mileage (for a brick) engine.

Be sure the PCV system is super-clean.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

SOunds like a classic case of piston slap. The pistons are jsut a little loose in their bores, and when cold they contract a little and make the clearance even larger. And they clatter until they warm up and expand slightly. Nothing to do with oil pressure (cylinder bores are only splash fed oil unless you have a 93+ motor with oil sprayers, and even then the oil isn't the issue), and nothing short of an engine rebuild will cure the noise. Good news is that it isn't really a death knell for your motor, it will soldier on for a long time if that is its only problem.
