I have a blue 1989 volvo 780 turbo with about 176k miles. It was hit in the driver door several years ago. I just got around to buying a new door at the salvage yard but now found myself a newer car with 29k miles. I want to sell the bertone but don't know if it pays to spend the time and money on it since it has about 176k miles. any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.....Jeffrey

I think it may be a good idea to fix it. A door is not too big a deal. I just bought an'89 780 - also blue with beige interior. I paid over $4K for mine- but it's in exceptional condition even with 154,000 miles. They are rare and some would say worth keeping the few on the road. I worry about spare parts on the trim and body. They drive nice. The trunk system is a bit less than handy. Seats are great. The turbo cars are worth more than V6.
Best of luck on what you decide. My 2cents

They are quite rare. Total production was only about 7000, from 87 to 91, comparable to the 1800ES. The Turbo is more desirable than the regular model with the V6, as it is more sporting and the engine has fewer problems.
If the car you got the door from is in a local salvage yard, it would be worthwhile to either buy it complete and dismantle it at home or take everything you can remove from it where it sits. Nearly all body and interior trim parts, lights etc., are unique to this model and will find a ready market.

HI !
All Bertone VOLVO`s are futures collection peaces, they are rare in SWEDEN also, talk about in here in Finland. During last summer, I saw more JAGUAR- roadster`s than Bertone- VOLVO`s. Did not see ANY of 780`s. It is too NEW to import in here.

It's a sad fact that these majestic vehicles are getting fewer in number every year. The blue-book value for them is above average, but few people are willing to pay book value for them due to the time required to find parts for them when something is needed.
I think you would be best off if you can find a Volvo enthusiast, like someone on this board, who would be willing to offer you a fair price and do the work himself. If you have the time to do the work yourself, go for it. If you don't, I wouldn't pay someone else to do it as you may have a hard time recovering the cost with the improved value (depending on how much they charge per hour for the job).
If it weren't for my distance (Michigan) and my lack of funding right now (just got married last month), I'd be seriously considering that car. Blue is my favorite, and it would match my 240 wagon well. -not to mention my dream of having a His & Hers pair of Bertone coupes.
Whatever you do, don't sell it to a salvage yard or someone who's going to part it out. From watching your Brickboard posts in the past few years, you've put a lot of parts, time, and labor into that car and it's overall condition should merit keeping it on the road. All you need to do is find the right buyer.
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

I'm in Atlanta and there's a gold one in the south Pull-A-Part junkyard (their slogan: "The best strip joint in town". I was thinking of trying to put the glass moon panel into my '89 740 wagon sunroof. I just mention it in case some Georgia folks might be looking for something unique to the 780. The yard makes no distinction in year, make, or model when pricing a part. A Jaguar alternator costs the same as one from a Chevette.

Thanks for the response, now that I have the car running really well, it is hard to part with. The thing is the 176k miles make me wary to put much money into it to sell it. HOw did the radio thing work out for you..the faceplate with the radio conversion...thanks...Jeffrey

"How did the radio thing work out for you..the faceplate with the radio conversion?"
That project has been back-burnered for a bit. I just got married last month and that event postponed most of my Volvo project work. The 780 hasn't had much attention in the last year, but this spring I hope to have it back on the road with some upgraded knock sensors (for the B280 V6 engine) and the radio conversion completed. It would have been nice to pull away from the Church with my wife in the 780, but my 240 wagon had got to do the job.
For those who are reading this post and are curious what I'm doing, I'm adding a 6-disc Alpine CD changer (a newer one that can read conventional discs and MP3 discs) to the trunk of my 780. The Volvo CR-813 and CR-814 tape decks as equipped in many 940s from 1991 and later have an Alpine M-Bus jack on the back and will allow connection to a CD changer. This would be a plug & play solution, except that the 780 has a slightly modified (trapezoidal) faceplate while the rest of the 700 series cars have a true rectilinear/square faceplate. In a nutshell, I need to take my original faceplate and put it over top of the CR-813 radio and then fashion a small wire harness adapter before it will work in my 780. The 1991 780 cars came with a true CR-813/814 already installed, but since there were only 500 or so vehicles made that year, getting my hands on one of those radios is nearly impossible.
God bless,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

So you are saying I cant just put modern radio/Cd player in my 780 dash? I don notice that both the radio and equalizer seem to have a non DIN opening.
My rear speakers are shot- cones rotted out. Looks like there is an amp under th rear shelf between the speakers.
Thanks Fitz any info is appreciated.

My rear speakers were also shot. The front speakers looked ok but I replace all four with Boston Acoustics sx95s and sx65s. The stock amps have no trouble powering these speakers. The speakers are a perfect fit except the front speakers require new screw holes - three vs four holes. I play my iPod through a cassette adapter into the original radio -- an alternative to installing a cd player and different radio.

"So you are saying I cant just put modern radio/Cd player in my 780 dash?"
Correct. -at least not without a lot of hacking and slashing and wiring work. You will quickly loose the stock look and most new radios that I've seen installed in 780s look terrible. Watch the 780s that come and go on eBay for a few months to see some prime examples of how terrible they can look.
If you want to keep the original look, and you want to keep the EQ, you're best off upgrading to the Volvo CR-813 or CR-814 radios. If interested, email me off board and we can talk the finer details over the phone. My email address is in my Brickboard user profile.
God bless,
Fitz.
FYI, the amps in the 780 are much larger than the stock 740/760 amps and should last the life of the car or longer. Replacing the speakers will be a huge improvement as the paper cones don't last so well after 20 years of use.

Fitz,
Long time but I'm back a bit...
I have a CR-814 out of my 1991 780. It was an easy swap for a Kenwood unit with the flip closed faceeplate. It looks pretty good. I have the entire factory unit but it may need some work. The radio has some scratchiness in it and the CD changer would quit occationally. That's why I replaced it. The front amp was disconnected for some reason.
November 29th, another driver was trying to use my lane in the wrong directon and hit me almost head-on. Needless to say, my beautiful "Sophia" was totaled. The entire front end was torn off and most ot the driver's side destroyed. Even the roof buckled some. She saved my life though...and maybe the other driver too. I sustained fractures of my heel and fibula, cuts in my head, a strained shoulder, and corneal abrasion. I will return to work on Monday. God is not finished with me yet. :)
I was able to find another 1991 780 but have to have it shipped in. It should be here is a couple of weeks. I salvaged the Kenwood unit and might put it in the new one. That would give me another factory unit. Let me know if you're interested.
BTW, congrats on the wife (Proverbs 18:22)
Safe Blessings,
Patrick

Praise the Lord! -another life saved! I'm sorry it was at the expense of your 780, but I know that God doing some incredible work through you and will continue to bless you abundantly. Just last week, an '89 740 Turbo that I had put together for a friend (from a conglomeration of vehicles) saved her life as she swerved to avoid someone pulling out in front of her, lost control on the ice, and went sideways into a tree at speed. God is good!
I salvaged the Kenwood unit and might put it in the new '91 780. That would give me another factory unit. Let me know if you're interested.
Yes! I'm definately interested. I'll send you an email of list.
BTW, congrats on the wife (Proverbs 18:22, He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.)
Thanks! I definately married the wife of Proverbs 21, and the Lord has blessed me abundantly! God bless you and your family,
Fitz.
