Volvo saves another life (pictures) 700

My wife's Nephew was first on the scene of this accident.

North of Victoria BC, Canada and heading North on the highway a young lady hit water and hydroplaned. It spun her around and she sheared off a lamp standard and then went down a bank. I've seen the lamp standards along this section of highway and they appear to be on 8"-12" of concrete.

I believe the car is a 1991 740.

Her injuries were: 2 collapsed lungs, pelvis broken in 4 places, ruptured spleen and lacerated liver, broken jaw and cheek bone, and cracks in some of her vertebrae. I met her 6 weeks after the accident and she's doing incredibly well.

Interesting to note that it didn't deploy the air bag. Not that it would have done much good in a side impact.

I would not be surprised if some lesser cars would have broken in half from such an impact. I have seen the aftermath of similar crashes in the newspaper more than once, usually involving teenagers drag racing in their hopped up Hondas and the like.

I have long believed that having poles right next to the road, for whatever reason, is a really bad idea in terms of collision hazard. Utility lines should be underground, and floodlighting of highways is a major waste of energy and causes light pollution, while yielding little or no safety benefit. Low intensity illumination (a greenish LED every couple of feet, for example) of the edges of the road would be a lot more helpful.

    HI!

Well, she had a VERY GOOD LUCK too, I looked the tires and they were like OEM size, and had something to wear also. I have always said, that man can save money in many things in car, but there is JUST same area by the road in same time, that we have if we crawl. When there is suddenly place, where is more water in the road, and grip has gone you chanced driver to passenger. You just wait if you get car in control anymore. Good Tires are like a Life- insurance, or pension a good investment for the future. Many Greetings to Her and You all.

    YRS: WEBERMAN
