Welcome Dennis

as it seems you're new to the Brickboard, and maybe to Volvo.
If you want to flush your AT, not just change the ATF, you'll need more than the quantity it holds.
As I'm not good in lecturing, let me just suggest that you use the 700 series board rather than the 300. Also in FAQ and older posts you'll find tons of info about a tranny flush.

Good luck with your new brick.
Neil.

You could use Mobil 1 ATF sythetic, a lot more expensive but it last longer so it is a trade of.

For your post-'83 car, Dexron .... 300 1990

For your 1990 (and all models from '84-on), you're supposed to use Dexron. Dexron, Dexron-II, -III, etc., are all just successive generations based on new standards at the time -- use whatever is the current iteration.

By the way, for any readers with a pre-'84 car, you're supposed to use Type F instead of Dexron.

As for suggestions, I've used synthetic ATFs (as long as they're compatible with the above types) for about ten years, and won't use the regular stuff anymore. It's more expensive, but so is a transmission; and the synthetics last longer before they discolor (a sign of breaking down), so I'm convinced it's worth it. But that's me. At least use the right type.

Regards,

AW 70/71 fluid capacity 700 1990

Total Capacity (including Torque Converter) is given as 7.4 qt.

I'd suggest flushing with 10 or 12 qt. on a car with unknown history. Use the flushing method described in the 700/900 FAQ forum. (Don't try to drop the pan. It's no longer recommended by Volvo.)

Find the 700/900 FAQ using the --select shortcut-- menu button at top right corner.
