question about proper alternator for '81 245 200

Which amp (55/70) alternator is the proper one? Is Bosch the way to go? Are any modifications neccessary to make the pulley, and fan, fit properly? Thank you :)

question about proper alternator for '81 245 200

Using an alternator with greater capacity than original will do no harm.

My experience is that any Bosch alternator that will fit into the original bracket will work just fine. There may be (don't know for sure) a pulley line-up issue if you get an alternator from a B230 engine (1985 240 or younger).

So an alternator from a B21 or B23 engine will drop in, no mods needed.

It is very easy to install a new brushes/regulator unit with the alternator on the bench. Put new accessory bushings into the bracket, too.

Do not re-connect the battery ground terminal before the alternator is installed and belts tightened and all three wires are connected securely.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
