steering issues resolved....mostly 200 1986

Hey brikheads thanks for the help on the steering issue. Yesterday I removed the magnet from my reserveour dipstick (it was encrusted with very very fine metalic powder) and flushed the system using the turkey baster method....more properly the giant syringe used to slurp up 2 stroke oil for premixing. The fluid was filthy and a deep deep mahogony color. I filled the system with fresh ATF cycled pole to pole a dozen or so times and flushed it out again. After 3 fills and flushes the fluid was totally clean. I topped the level off and then went on to phase 2....I constructed an extension for my PB Blaster sprayer...I took a piece of the spray tubing off of another brand of lube can and inserted it into a 3ft length of the smallest vacuum hose that I could find. i then attached the other end of the vac hose to a long piece of stiff wire...aka a coat hanger put a 30 degree bend in the tip and bam...a great extension that allowed me to reach both Universal Joints aka steering couplers and douse them with PB blaster....I repeated the PB lube 24 hours later....followed by a spray of white grease on both joints to make the fix a bit more permanent. The creaking and groaning felt in the steering wheel (think a spanish gallion slowly rocking in the waves) which I felt in slow turns is 100% gone!....the reserevour cap still leaks a tiny bit, but I will live with that. thanks to all who helped....Happy Brick slingin

Your excellent follow up post caught my attention. Just exactly where is the second steering column U joint. I know about the one [at least I think only one] in the engine compartment way down low, but where is the second? THX

the second joint is up closer to the firewall hidden under the brake booster. that is the reason why I needed to construct the previously described lube hose extender. good luck...those joints are really expensive so i would try the lube before the replacement

Consider buying a spare set of new steering column U-joints... they will die again.

As far as the shavings in the resevoir, they could be coming from the rack or the pump, some is normal, but check it again in a few months, if it is full again, think pump and rack impending failure.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but perhaps an in-line filter between the rack and the pump would be in order. Haven't done this myself, but I've thought about it.

Yeah I know....the metalic particles were the size of superfine sugar granuals so I think that they are just a sign of super long wear...those parts are almost 22 years old now. no serious shavings or anything. It occured to me that the particles could have been from the magnet itself. it was a compressed composite type of magnet...think the ones that look and feel a bit like brake pad material. next time i will use one of the rare earth high dollar ones from the electonics supply place....think the ones that look like hearing aid batteries and cost $20 a pop. For now the old girl steers like a champ...If she makes it to 400k miles which she will...Maybe by then I can move on in the automotive world and another brickhead can be baptized into the world of ultra high milage....we'll see

If the "shavings" are Magic Demon Dust near the size of powdered sugar, you are talking about normal wear! If you are getting "shavings" that have shape, especially spiral, then you have serious issues.

Based on your provided details, I'll back off from the "dire" outcome.
