Hey abram,

I was bookmarking master cylinders I found on ebay myself, until a few weeks ago when I erased all my bookmarks! Anyway, I know I've seen em on ebay, and various types. For example, here's one (not sure this is correct for your 544):

Click here for early Volvo 122 master cylinder on ebay

I would also check with Olof, cause not only will he sometimes beat other people's prices, he's pretty knowledgeable about which one you will need (I've found anyway):
Vintage Import Parts (Olof)

p.s. I think that guy who responded that you could just top your brake fluid off every 10 miles might be a troll. not that you were seriously considering such nonsense ;-) On the internet I've often found it helpful to heed this advice - Do Not Feed the Trolls. Usually, they go away if you ignore em :)

Can you give us a bit more detail on the symptoms? Your problem description is a bit illogical (at least to me). If it is leaking, where exactly? When was it last rebuilt? Sources of a leak could be at the filler line, the front union or at any of the 3 brake lines. If you have a leak at the back of the MC, where the piston rod exits, then you'd also have no brakes. I've even seen a leak caused by moisture in the brake fluid freezing and preventing the seal from keeping the pressure up. Call me old fashion, but I like to know what caused the apparent failure. In my 38 years of experience with Volvos, although the symptoms often look serious, once you discover the real problem, often the fix is very trivial and less costly. I suspect the MC could be honed out, if there is not any serious pitting inside the bore.

Before you go spending more money, a bit more rational problem solving may better pinpoint the exact problem. I wouldn't throw the master cylinder out with the bath water.

I got one from Swedish Treasures a few years back.
They also had repair kits, although it sounds like you aren't interested in that.

I have heard there is a Raybestos master cylinder with part number MC6086 that they say will fit PV444, PV544, P1200 & Amazon. It appears to be available from Rockauto.com for $79.99. Here is a picture:

Good luck!

yes that's the one. I remember when I got one of those for my B-16. Raybestos master cylinder with part number MC6086. It also listed as fitting a '48 Willy's and I bet it was used on a bunch of other cars too.

yes, the raybestos master cylinder is the same as what was used on the old Datsun Fairlady sports car. also I believe it was used on old ramblers too. if you take your old one off and take it to a good auto parts store they will be able to trace a serial number off of your old one to give you the current one. These were used on quite a few different cars and i heard even some tractors!

I only wish there was a bolt-on solution for converting these 444 single-barrel, single-brake zone systems to more of a multi-brake zone one. This way if one brake line dies the whole brake system doesn't fail.
